My son has bought a winch bumper for his gladiator. I've got an older M12000 warn he could toss on, but it doesn't free spool very well if at all. Is that just old grease? Figure I could take it apart, clean it out and regrease and be good. What sort of grease does it need? Could it need parts too?

It probably is old grease. I think those just use axle grease. I could be wrong. I sent my M8K to Clemson 4wd Center. They are a certified Warn dealer and repair facility. There is also planetary gear sets in there that can get damaged.

Pulled the gear case off and the drum spun freely. Took it all apart and worked on it in the parts washer for a couple hours. Wire wheeled it all to knock off the scale, then slathered on new grease and put it back together. I can spin it but barely. Still some rust and pits on the parts so I think it's just what it is unless I order new planetaries.

Once it's mounted on the bumper I'll run the motor while it's in freespool and set all the new grease in and see what happens.

If I remember right these have a drum brake too. Might want to research that.

I thought they did too but I didn't see it in there. Spool spun easily with the gear case removed. Pretty sure it's just the grit on the gears that's binding. Must have gotten wet over the years...

Brake is inside the drum.

Warn recommends Aeroshell 33.

Lot of drag in the gears and stuff if you're trying to spin by hand.
