My 8000 has the most lame cable-to-drum attachment in the world. A small 1/4-20 screw holds the end of the cable into the side of the drum. I know not to get down to the last few wraps of the drum when winching but have broken the end of the cable, redrilled it, broke again, and redrilled for the last day at Dixie Run.
Is this how all winch ropes are attached?
I might just go to synthetic rope this time, just haven't looked for it yet.
Thanks,
RQ

The trick is to keep at least half the drum covered onthe first layer, meaning you loose about 10-12 ft of lenght for a pull.

you shouldn't be pulling on the screw/anchor as that is it's only reason for exisitance.

Ramsey winches use a clip to hold the cable to the side of the drum, pulls right out, the hydrulic winches on wreckers only have a set screw holding the end in a small hold in the drum.

pulled many a cable off the drum when I was driving wrecker, usually happend when I was in a hurry.

Ditto with a Warn X8000i. I have found that I need to leave a full layer on the drum with synthetic or I end up pulling the rope out of the crimped on terminal.

RQ, get you some synthetic cable, you will love it. As far as the fastening, I unspooled mine to re-wrap it and found that the rope had pulled out of the crimped end. Fixed it and after all the winching at Tellico, so far its not pulled out again. Like Joel said I leave a full layer on it just in case.

RQ,
Let me know if I can help, I keep synthetic line and cable in stock for various applications. You should not need anything but that small bolt and the friction on the drum to keep the cable seated. As long as you keep enough on the drum it will be fine........

As RQ stated, it did NOT appear to be a case of getting too few wraps on the drum...

It DID appear to be your basic POS crappy copper electrical lug soldered to the end on the cable that broke... judging by the fact it broke on the side, I'd say the 2nd/3rd wrap took it out during a pull...
