About 5:15 or so today, I was sitting in the dark house, surfing the net on my laptop. I see somebody come up on the porch, he rings the doorbell, and before I get over to the door, he opens up the storm door. I open the front door before he tries the knob, if that was what he was working towards. He's just about surprised to see me.

He started telling .... strike that.... making up a story about why he was there. There were 2 guys, and a work van parked in the driveway next door. He was saying he had a service call, somebody's heat was off, and couldn't find the address, all he has was "2115"....house next door is 2113, and I'm 2201. He didn't have a name for the homeowner he was looking for. He also said this his "dispatcher" told him the house next door (mine) had a garage out back, and a "truck in the front yard with a propane tank in the bed". The 715 is in the front yard, but (1) you can't see the propane tank from the road and (2) why in the heck would my neighbor describe finding her house in that way?

Anyway, all my warning bells and whistles are going off, and I start asking simple questions....like "What's the name of your company?". He decides to leave pretty quick after that. I call the cops. About 20 minutes later, city cop calls the house, he's got a van matching the description pulled over....asks a few questions, determine it's not the right van, and then he cuts them loose and comes over to my house. I gave him a better description of the van (same description I gave to the dispatch, but they didn't relay everything). I wasn't able to get a plate #, though. Cop is putting out a bolo to the city cops, and the county sheriff dept.

Anyway...warning to all of y'all...lots of thievery going on around here...question everything, and listen to that little voice that tells you to check something out. The repairman next door may not be a repairman after all.

I'm just off US-1, so I figure it's not somebody from Lee County, they just tried to hit somewhere just off the main road...he turned back towards US-1 when he left our neighborhood. I'm betting he's probably from Moore County, maybe Wake.

If anybody sees a newer model silver/light gray Ford van, 2 red f/g extension ladders on top, no lettering or logos on the sides...well, just keep your eyes open if he's in your neighborhood.

One thing the cop did tell me....very few houses being broken into around here have alarm systems. They are looking for easier pickings. We have a system, and plenty of stickers on the doors/windows/garage, etc. Still didn't keep the bastage off my front porch.

The was a guy (junkie) lurking around work today trying to sell crappy 35mm camera for $3 so he could but some gas. He walked up on a guy in the parking lot and scared the shit out of him. We are gonna have to start watching everything a little closer.

Maybe you have the wrong stickers...

The BIG problem with stuff like that is that in the event of an otherwise justifiable self-defense shooting, it can easily sway a jury. (BTW if ever in that situation, I want a jury of my peers...college educated, gun-owning, non-sheeple, english-speaking, citizens).

If you make it thru the DA and cops....having stickers like that on your windows is a slam-dunk when the civil (lawsuit) trial comes along.

I would think those signs stickers would give fair warning to a would be perp and if they still decide to enter then one has every right to defend themselves. Obviously nobody wants to take a life unless they have to. Now I do not know the legality of self defense here in Charlotte but when we were broken into and the perp stole an SKS, I told the LEO that if I had caught him he and my mossberg would have had a short convo. The LEO told me to do what I had to do to protect my family but that it's best to give fair warning before resorting to violence. I think even just a showing of lethal force would deter most would be perps ie... signs, stickers, or have them stare at the business end of a firearm if you catch them in the house.

not sure if this makes any sense, I'm pretty tired right now not having been to sleep and all waiting to get the kids up for school.

Exactly! Those stickers are fair warning. DO NOT COME INSIDE OR YOU WILL BE SHOT!

1. Those signs are an advertisement for anyone who takes the time to case your house and know when you're gone. We've got high dollar stuff people will happily buy w/ no questions asked..
2. I'd ask the Sheriff if you could get some more patrol visibility in the area for a little while maybe a couple weeks. Esp. if you're gone during the day.
3. Talk to your neighbors. Set up a google groups list and invite them to use it. You can use it for reporting suspicious persons, comparing notes on garbage rates, community improvement, or home improvement recommendations.

I'm typing up what happened, and going to print out copies and get to all the neighbors. Let them know what happened, and remind them to be aware, and question, at least to themselves, anything that goes on. There are only 25 or so houses in our development.

Last conversation I had with someone coming to my door like that occurred with me holding a shotgun about 10' away from them.

The law's fairly clear in NC. I'd swear to God (because it would be true) I was fearful of my/my family's lives.

In today's societal atmosphere....I find NOT owning a gun to be irresponsible.

I know man traps are not allowed in NC but I have had some people snooping in my side /back yard .So I stuck some rusty nails through some boards laying in the ground and I heard 1 scream at night and no more problems. I was asked by a officer about it and told him it was left over wood from a renovation project LoL

Great sounds like you are less than 10 mins from my place. I will keep an eye out I travel late at night. Do you live in a neighborhood that the houses are close or far apart?

I'm in the Tramway area, behind the BP station. About 20-25 houses on small (1/4 acre or so) lots. Everybody here is pretty good about watching out for each other...a couple of retired folks always home, a couple of stay at home mom's, some 2nd and 3rd shift workers that are home during the day, a couple more like me that are self-employed and come and go several times during the day (and night) at odd times. For security/community watch, it's a pretty good mix. There's been a couple of break-ins in the neighborhood, and I'd say over half the houses have alarm systems now.

Oh...also have a deputy sheriff living in the neighborhood...too bad he drives a plain car, not a marked patrol vehicle now.

I keep hearing this same type of story over and over all over the internet

Seems like this is the norm now a days, defiantly be careful!

within the last 3 days my next door neighbor (we live in townhouses) was robbed of almost everything. I guess having a dog that barks at anything outside my place helped me out. Also that there is almost always a old country boy ford sitting in my numbered spot, she was gone with no cars in her spot.

I guess having quality built places where sound doesn't travel AT ALL sucks every now and then.

The shotgun is sitting a little closer to the bed, and since I'm out of school I make sure to enjoy a beer outside with my dog by my side every night after midnight.
