About 5:15 or so today, I was sitting in the dark house, surfing the net on my laptop. I see somebody come up on the porch, he rings the doorbell, and before I get over to the door, he opens up the storm door. I open the front door before he tries the knob, if that was what he was working towards. He's just about surprised to see me.
He started telling .... strike that.... making up a story about why he was there. There were 2 guys, and a work van parked in the driveway next door. He was saying he had a service call, somebody's heat was off, and couldn't find the address, all he has was "2115"....house next door is 2113, and I'm 2201. He didn't have a name for the homeowner he was looking for. He also said this his "dispatcher" told him the house next door (mine) had a garage out back, and a "truck in the front yard with a propane tank in the bed". The 715 is in the front yard, but (1) you can't see the propane tank from the road and (2) why in the heck would my neighbor describe finding her house in that way?
Anyway, all my warning bells and whistles are going off, and I start asking simple questions....like "What's the name of your company?". He decides to leave pretty quick after that. I call the cops. About 20 minutes later, city cop calls the house, he's got a van matching the description pulled over....asks a few questions, determine it's not the right van, and then he cuts them loose and comes over to my house. I gave him a better description of the van (same description I gave to the dispatch, but they didn't relay everything). I wasn't able to get a plate #, though. Cop is putting out a bolo to the city cops, and the county sheriff dept.
Anyway...warning to all of y'all...lots of thievery going on around here...question everything, and listen to that little voice that tells you to check something out. The repairman next door may not be a repairman after all.
I'm just off US-1, so I figure it's not somebody from Lee County, they just tried to hit somewhere just off the main road...he turned back towards US-1 when he left our neighborhood. I'm betting he's probably from Moore County, maybe Wake.
If anybody sees a newer model silver/light gray Ford van, 2 red f/g extension ladders on top, no lettering or logos on the sides...well, just keep your eyes open if he's in your neighborhood.
One thing the cop did tell me....very few houses being broken into around here have alarm systems. They are looking for easier pickings. We have a system, and plenty of stickers on the doors/windows/garage, etc. Still didn't keep the bastage off my front porch.
