hey guys, looking for help on 92 YJ 4.0

checked my oil, had yellow gunk on the dipstick, also had gunk in the ccv line from the valve cover to the air filter. changed oil when i bought the jeep about 1 K miles ago. at that time i cleaned the ccv lines because of oil in my air filter. some people say it could be the head gasket, but wouldn't i be losing coolant if it were?

any input would be appreciated.

How many miles are on this engine?

Sounds like massive blow-by - causing pseudo condensation and sludge in the crankcase.

Make sure your PCV/CCV system is actually ventilating.

If so, it might be time for a freshen up on the engine.

Hate to say it.

Could also just be normal condensation if you don't drive it very far and the shut it down a lot. I.E. Short trips where the engine doesn't get warm. Is the oil level high?

142 K miles, but i don't know what all was done to it previously.
oil level looks to be in the normal range.
when i first got it and cleaned the line to the manifold it was extremely blocked. is there something at the valve cover to clean?

oh, and i do drive it mostly short distances, about 6 miles one way.

head gasket!.....sorry but that is prob. what it is. It does not need to be a big blow out to let some water in, you prob. have a small crack (leak) on the head gasket and over time it allows water (antifreeze)in to the oil, that is why you donot see a big water loss or over heating. you should have it checked by a pro.

The short trip thing is probably your problem. Try runnin' it down the interstate for 15 to 20 miles every so often and see if that helps. Not sure if there is anything at the valve cover to clean, but it sounds to me like the PVC system is working since you got the same stuff in the hose to the air cleaner. I think it's pretty normal for the 4.0 to get oil on the air filter. Seen it a lot. K&N anyone? LOL.

Get a pan and change your oil this weekend. If the water showes up - might be a good time to think about a head gasket. If there is enough antifreeze in the system to bolw in the air filter it's pretty bad.. I live in W-S and could look at it if needed. A good way to fix the blow by is go to advance and buy some 1/4 inch fittings and about 2' of 1/4 inch gas line. 3/16 is what it has factory (I think). Check the line first I forgot. Look at the line coming from the Valve cover to the intake. If it's cracked or stopped up it will cause blowby.

2 quick easy checks for head gasket.
1) try a compression test if its a bad blow out you will havee low compresion on 2 adjacent cylinders. If dont have acomprssion tester spend $20 at AZ ORR
2) (This is a little unorthodox old school test method, that works great)
Crank engine and let idle.
Hook a test light to you (-) battery terminal and use the needle end at the dizzy to punch threw spark plug wires 1 by 1. This will effecticvely short out each as you do this. If you hear an audible stumble or hesitation when you do it that cylinder is fine. If no change in idle quality, that indicates a problem, again usually will be on 2 adjacent cylinders.

***For those who will question how/why this works, If you are getting water into the combustion chamber you will get an incomplete burn or none at all... this cylinder will not be firing efficiently. If you "short out" a properly functioning cylinder you will hear a very definite change in idle quality. If you "short out" an ineficient or "washed out" cylinder there will be little or no change.***

Another fun trick if you are suspicious of water in a particular cylinder... disconnect the coil so you have no spark and the EFI fuse so no fuel going in. Now, remove the spark plug, and have a buddy stand RIGHT IN FRONT of the open hole and tell him to stair closely at it...
If there's water getting in, it will shoot it right out the plug holes about 3-5 feet and your buddy will curse at you.
The laugh you can get out of this makes the whole head gasket repair feel not so bad.
