As an IT guy thats been on the "other" side of the fence....it's their network, their connection, their hardware. They get to set the rules. Probably part of your employment contract or company policy manual, too, if they are current with the times. If they don't want you on, don't try and get around it. Their time, their toys.

That said....

Have you tried asking? I have allowed access to forums when folks have asked...as long people ask nice, and they are sure to say that it's for access on break time and lunch, etc...and that they know that access times and usage show up in the logs.

I've also been on the receiving end...asked for access, got it.

I am having a time right now at one client, with folks listening to streaming radio. That's killing the Internet connection for the people that really need it (lots of FTP transfers in and out there). Block it, and they find a way around, or a new site to listen to. A simple google search finds ways around or secondary access. Boss has laid down the law, several times...he's picking who to 'make an example of' now... The one I think is gonna get cut listens to a LOCAL radio station over the Internet...could do that with a ten dollar radio.

What Kaiser said. Check your policies at work before going any further.

It depends on how it's setup. Websense is an industry leader, so you won't get around the unit, but you might be able to get around the configuration.

Remote desktop to your home PC is a possible option, either using the native Windows RDP, or something like LogMeIn, GoTo, etc.

I serve up a wireless connection from my phone, connect to it from my work laptop in addition to the wired LAN connection. I then add persistent routes for the specific sites that I cannot visit on the LAN. We use a proxy configured via the browser, so I just exclude those sites from the proxy.

i tried to close the int. conn. and use my blackberry like i do at home. but i couldnt get the blackberry mgr loaded.
nothing in the handbook about this policy, im in sales. its not like were not messing around most of the day anyway. and it doesnt look like im going to be here long term anyway

Have you tried asking politely? Walk in with a plate full of cookies and a sheepish grin.
IT guys are human too! If there's nothing explicitly banning it, it's very possible its either blocked by mistake or they just don't care.

no IT guy there. just the owner, small dealership. almost everything is blocked. tried to get the weather channel today. hell somedays our own website is blocked.

Web Sense can be an installed proxy that is set in your DHCP scopes.

Meaning everytime you log in to your computer it automatically routes you to the web sense filter.

The installation was probably done by someone who either has never done it before or who was told to block everything. It sounds like the first.

In order to get around the filter you would need a proxy server(which is blocked by websense) or a route to an established internet connection.

or if you have a wireless signal at work(like for the waiting customers) you can pipe into that with your laptop and a wireless card.

All in all I would probably just talk to whoever set it up and tell them whats going on.

Too bad you don't have an IT guy...most of us can be bribed with food.
