What to you guys think of a 50x75 ft. shop with 20' ceilings, lift, loading dock, 14’ drive in door with bathroom facilities and stocked with Tools, Tig, Mig, Tube Bender, Torches and Metal stock. Available for the weekend warrior on a rental bases with a knowledgeable staff to over see the projects.

Scheduling nightmare is what I think.

Is this an existing location or a 'new business idea'?

The concept isn't new but I've only seen them in the older movies (Christine) where you rent a 'cage' by the month and have access to tools, equipment etc.. I think given the right setup and clientele it might work. It would really depend on price and the details.

And it sounds like a liability nightmare as well (ie MY expensive truck just fell off your DEFECTIVE lift). And what about expensive tools being broken or stolen? I think it's one thing when it's just buddies involved, it's another thing when the general public gets involved...however, these types of shops seem to work well in Canada (I believe it's called U-Wrench-It). I'm sure there could be some sorta waivers, but I'd imagine those can only go so far. But yeah, I kinda do this at a buddy's shop now...he lets me use one of his bays when I need to, since it's more comfy than my driveway...and his shop has more tools than I do...and as a courtesy, I usually offer up $100 at the end...and offer food and beer along the way. Outside of people you know and trust, I don't think it would be a smart business venture.

When I was in College, they had a tool cage in the auto shop. You got 5 "coins" and you could get out one tool for each coin.If at the end of the shop time you didn't have all your tools to turn in,you weren't allowed in the shop again until you produced the missing tools or you could pay the cash value of the tool.It worked out really well,I don't ever remember them having a problem. As far as lifts and general safety,we had to sign a waiver on that kind of thing and the Professor supervised all the cars being racked.

There is a place in downtown Asheville called DIYwoodworking where u can work on your wood working projects. They provide all the tools have people to assist you with you wood projects. Seems to be doing well ever time I pass bye it seems to have 6-8 cars in the parking lot.

i would let friends work on whatever they want, but i would be damned if i would let the general public touch my tools.

Yeah That wouldnt go over very well.....I got tooooo much money in tools at the shop to let someone I dont know break or loose them....:shaking:

I'd definitely be interested in it! I don't have the money to invest in tons of tools required to do what I'd like to do to my junk so, renting space/tool access would rock!!! :huggy:

EDIT: I read description again, I'd LOVE to get some TIG time!!! I've got a MIG but, no bender and no jig-a-joint, really no metal shaping tools to speak of so, access to them would rock!!!

A couple other thing that might be sweet to add- a metal forming brake of some sort, a press with dimple dies (gotta make them speed holes!!!), and a plasma cutter if possible!

Got me day dreaming now about having access to a wonderful bunch of tools!!! Where do I sign? : )
