welding the spider gears is how it is done. The reason it is "better" is the wheels always turn even if one is not touching the ground. Think of a 4-wheeler's rear axle. both tires always spin and it goes off road much better. Welding the rear is not such a great thing for highway use, but many wheelers will weld the rear (myself included) spiders together for their trail rigs. My street jeep has a locker, which makes driving on paved roads better.
