Welding stainless to mild steel

For a driveshaft, I have a slug of stainless that fits inside a piece of mild steel to make the driveshaft how I need to. Would it be weak to weld stainless to mild steel or will it not really matter?

I would think sticking it out with some 309s would work well.

it will be fine. If I was stick welding it I would use a 7018,

X2 or MIG or TIG with 309/309-L filler rods

309 is a stainless to mild steel rod. Use this rod. If you don't have that rod, then #2 choice would be a 7018 or any ER 70XX rod as they are very common and most with a stick welder will have it on hand.

Thanks, I will get some TIG rods and go that route since I can't stick weld for crap...
