buick 225 rebuild. really like the idea of a sump in it to help with oiling. if I clean it real good, and grind out to bare, is there a risk to MIG welding in a sump ring around the pickup? and maybe a windage / weir type deal as well? it doesnt leak, so Im not worried about water tight, just the fusion of the oil infused metal to the new.

thoughts?

Steel? If so: Clean. Clean again. Clean with good non residue aerosol. My favorite is a Castrol product.
Weld and don't look back.

Aluminum.......repeat above, heat with torch....reapeat above....and GTAW to cook out the unbelievable amount of oil absorbed into the pan.

Edit: some sarcasm may be lost in the reading.....until the aluminum part, none meant. ;)

Acetone if it's stamped steel. Some throttle body cleaners are just acetone (CRC brand I think), if you need it in aerosol form.

I know much more about the cleaning than the welding. :p

Nope. Circle track guys used to do this with Ford and GM inline 6 motors all the time.
Normal weld procedures apply.
Do note you can get windage trays too close even when you think they are far enough away.
But what's too close? I don't know.

Is starvation that big of an issue?

apparently these motors succckkkk regarding oil feed.
the guy that Im patterning this off of brazed his in
