i seen an article on wheeling in dixie about takeing a chevy alternator an turning it into a welder checkit out it is under the gm tech section under weldanator not sure on spelling so
 
right but the kind of give you a step by step view of the conversion first time i had seen this so i thought i would pass it along any info on this type thing would be apprectiated

I used to have one on my junk. I used a 125 amp alternator, ford dump truck high amperage rectifier, and jumper cables for welding leads. It worked great, but it had an extremely low duty cycle. The rectifier gets hot quickly and the wire leads melt off where they are soldered. Besides that, it worked great. Have fun with it!
 
standard 62 amp alt.works good for trail repairs.I've got one mounted on Nellie Belle(50 Willys M38) and I love it.
