I am looking to improve my Wet/dry vac. Currently I have a Shopvac with the water pump. I added a cyclone (Dust Deputy) to it and the performance when down quite a bit. I was thinking of getting another wet/dry vac and was looking into on of the 2 stage vacuums. Are those worth it? Could I hook a another vacuum up to the blower of the first and make a two stage vacuum?

You using it as a dust collector? You may could add a Y after the cyclone and put a matching vacuum there.

Primary use will be for portable tool use (sander, router, etc) as well as General vacuum use. I have thought about that. I currently have two vacuums but no where near the same size. One is from the 80's with a small gallon can the other is a 15 gallon shop vac. If I were to do matching I would go with a bigger two stage or small bucket type

Fein, Makita, Dewalt, Bosch, etc., all make dust extractors that have vac accessories, because they're really just vacs that have extra features like power sensing for tool use. I have a Festool unit that I use indoors but I'm guessing you're probably not trying to buy a Festool or Metabo unit. I still use my stainless can Shop Vac for general vac stuff because I use filter bags and they're way cheaper than Festool filter bags. I'd take a hard look at Fein, which seems to be the best performance value right now if you're using it with mixed-brand tools. The one downside is that there is no variable suction control on the unit, there's just a variable opening on the tool adapter at the end of the hose. They're sooooo quiet though.

I just think if you're going to be using it with tools, you should get something that's designed to work with tools. The general vacuum part is super easy, and anything can do that.

I thought that by adding the dust deputy you basically made your shopvac 2 stage. Are you disappointed in the dust deputy? I've been thinking about getting one.

No a two-stage has two blowers in it from what I've seen stacked on top of each other. Same motor shaft. It has absolutely decreased the CFM of the system. Before anything close to the nozzle got sucked up. Now it takes more effort. I'm going to put some hose clamps on the pipes to see if leaks are causing issue
