I ordered a new computer. This will be our first laptop. I am wanting to know what anti-virus software you like/dislike and what wireless router you like/dislike.

stopzilla for malware & spyware, popups spybot & adware for the rest works well for me

I despise anti-virus as a rule.
If you do not have 3Gs of memory it sucks...

Linksys is by far the easiest set up of the wireless routers (as part of my home tech company I have installed probably 50 diff wireless routers from 5-6 brands fwiw)

They all seem about equal in performance.

I'm running a D-Link router right now.... word of caution definitely secure your connection with a password/hide it etc...

And as for the protection: spybot, avg virus/spyware, the more the merrier (in my opinion, what one misses the other 5 probably will get)

I do computer and network support, mainly for small to mid business, but lots of residential, too (limited to the folks that are employed by my business clients).

Linksys is among the best of the home routers. I've had more Belkins/Dlinks/etc fail or give flakey problems. Very few problems out of the Linksys.

Among the home-type routers, yes. I don't use them in business environments (unless very small network, low user count, low budget).

BTW im making no statement towards commercial routers, I'll only pull the cables and term the ends on those, and let the customer call the hardware company direct...

I have a belkin router here and I am running my laptop and my desktop off of it with no problems. I have used a linksys and I didn't notice much difference between the two. As for the antivirus and spyware I love Zone Alarm for those. I have Zone Alarm suite on three computers and it pretty much keeps everything out. It also has real time protection so even if some where to try to get in it will pop up and do a scan.

The best wireless router is your neighbors...

he he he:lol:
Yea, cuz if they aint wireless they'll notice the extra cable runnin to your house!

My Linksys wireless router was an unholy piece of crap. It was easy to set up, but it would repeatedly drop the connection and every time it took a power cycle to make it come back. Took it back to Best Buy and exchanged it, the replacement had exactly the same problem. I threw that one in the trash, went and got Belkin, and I've been very pleased with that one.

I've been using eTrust EZAntivirus for years. Made by Computer Associates. Used to be called InoculateIt.

It doesn't hog memory or cpu like the Nortons of the world, and it doesn't try to take over your computer, either.

And it WORKS.

It's free if you're on Roadrunner, too. Don't know about other ISP's.

nod32 for antivirus.. smallest running footprint by far.

i use nvidia firewall as well. cause it came with the motherboard. it rocks. but you could just use windows firewall

and i second/third/whatever linksys it's easy to set up and just flat out works

I've had nothing but trouble with every linksys product I've had getting hot and then hanging, which means you lose your connection and have to power-cycle it. Replaced as much as I could with D-link and no more problems.

I have always used linksys routers and liked them. I am a computer tech so maybe I just overlook some of the basic maintenance that comes with them but I always highly recommend them. I agree with other guys make sure you password protect your wireless unless you just dont mind letting the whole neighborhood share your internet.

As for antivirus I personally use AVG mainly because it is free and simple. If you want to go out and actually purchase something then I recommend McAfee AV (not the internet security package).
