I have a buddy with a diesel Mercedes with bad Transmission 83 300sd

What is the motor worth so I can make a fair offer he has records for 7 years and it has 215xxx

I think he's asking 1500

No idea.
But I'll warn you, w/o the turbo that motor is slooooooow. at least it was in my mom's wagon ;-).

Hmmmm... If it's a complete engine, I'd guess between $800-1300. That's based on the recent decline in 300d values (been seeing a lot of beaters lately) and my friend who sold a wrecked 300TD a about 8 years ago as a parts car for $800.

I've got a running driving 85' SD with a good transmission and motor and the a/c works with the same miles...car looks like hell though ...but $1200 would buy the car. Those motors I usually sell for about $400-$500 out of the car....$1500 is really high for just the motor. I'll sell you the trans for $1000 installed.
I've got about 50 mercedes parts cars gas and diesel from 1975-2003

Unless you're just trying to get decent MPG out of your TJ ....you will be disappointed with a 5cylinder turbo diesel benz motor. Have you driven one before?

I had the OM617 out of a 81 300sd in my Yj for 2 years it had a turbo but I was disappointed with power I replaced it with a cummins 4bt much of the reason is the engines are old and expensive to rebuild and get low on compression but there are kits to hook them to AX-15 tranny.

I've got a 96 E300D I'd like to put in an Mj for a fuel efficient parts truck...... I'll probably end up just selling the whole car. It runs good just looks like crap and all the plastic breaks if you look at it wrong......

The 300d's and SD's from 78-85 all had om617's Glenn's 96 has a non turbo , twin cam , inline 6 (om606) for longevity and fuel economy it's a superior motor to the OM617.

If I could find a FSM and be able to get accurate info on how to take things apart I'd likely not be so irritated with this car..... But hey I got a VW TDI now so the 16 year old is driving it while the 98 xj gets fixed. I'm so over working on cars! Greg how's the family? Been a while sense I've seen you!

big woody which engine is in an 86 300 SDL? i'm now the owner of one
with 76 thou miles on it. one owner bought new by my mom. she turned
86 this year and gave it to me. it had sat covered in a car shed for 5-6
years. we installed a new battery and i swear it didn't turn over one full
time and busted off. had to install new fuel return lines thruout, charged
the ac system and had all the fluids and filters changed.
runs good and very comfortable on long trips.
anything i should look out for on the old girl?

OM603 engine. FWIW I have found the best info on these cars on the Peach parts forums. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/ The info on these Diesels is very hard to come by. That older year you might be able to find a FSM on but in the 90's MB went to a computer and cd system.
