For approved highway use, what is the largest tire size you can have on a vehicle in NC? Thanks for any info.

I had alway heard 44's, but that may not be true anymore.

as big as you can find for highway use.

X2. I'm pretty sure that as long as its a DOT approved tire, it's cool in NC.

I believe that the "legal" part would come into play with the raising of the truck over the max allowed 6" long before the max tire size was hit. Good thing most places in NC don't strictly enforce that part though.

I've always heard it's 50", but NC doesn't enforce it as far as I've ever seen.

Also, the only lift law I've ever heard of is no more than 6" above stock height without written permission from the commissioner of motor vehicles. No bumper heights or headlight/tail light heights to bother with.

§ 20‑135.4. Certain automobile safety standards.
(a) Definitions. – For the purposes of this section, the term "private passenger automobile" shall mean a four‑wheeled motor vehicle designed principally for carrying passengers, for use on public roads and highways, except a multipurpose passenger vehicle which is constructed either on a truck chassis or with special features for occasional off‑road operation.(b), (c) Repealed by Session Laws 1975, c. 856.
(d) The manufacturer's specified height of any passenger motor vehicle shall not be elevated or lowered, either in front or back, more than six inches by modification, alteration, or change of the physical structure of said vehicle without prior written approval of the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles.
On or after January 1, 1975, no self‑propelled passenger vehicle that has been so altered, modified or changed shall be operated upon any highway or public vehicular area without the prior written approval of the Commissioner. (1971, c. 485; 1973, cc. 58, 1082; 1975, c. 856.)

So, in this definition most "Donks" are illegally lifted since they are not for occasional off-road use. But I guess that law puts all the mall crawlers on here in jeopardy of getting ticketed as well since speed bumps aren't off-road obstacles.:flipoff2:

ill have to find my old book for citations but i do beleive the hight is to the center of the headlight now this may have changed and only seen or heard about it when i went to police school with a lifted truck and the instructor had to point it out.

Correct.. Donks, 2wd's that are lifted could be illegal if they went over certain heights

regardless of what part of the vehicle it is, they use the headlights or bumper or whatever just as a reference point, known by the state for each vehicle produced
