OK I am reassembling my 5.0 motor and I am stuck. On the back side of the heads there is a tube that connects them and then runs around to the front of the motor through some rubber hoses. I don't know what this piece is. The next problem is how do I seal it to the heads so it doesn't leak. I don't remember what was sealing it to the heads. I think my buddy might have take this piece off for me. Here's a couple pics of what I am talking about. If you can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

Behind where I am pointing is where the hole is on the heads.

The tube doesn't have any bolts in it in this one.

Looks like a secondary air line to me. Probably goes to the air pump on the front of the engine and puts air into the exhaust. Are the heads new? If so I think I'd delete the lines and move on without them. Not sure how the computer would like that though. If you put them back on you can buy gasket material in sheets and just cut out your own gasket.

If you plan to use RTV make sure to get some Copper high temp RTV. The holes in the cylinder head are supplies for the AIR/smog pump and it gets pretty hot. Are you using this motor in a DD or a offroad power plant?

It's the daily driver motor for the daughters convertible Mustang. I actually have 3 years before she gets her license so my wife wants to drive it now. She is rushing me to get it done. Once it is done I can build my Jeep. I wish I could use it in my Cherokee. I will get the high temp copper RTV tomorrow. Thanks

That is the air pump tube. I just bought a 5.0 out of Stang for my truck. The guy I bought it from told me to cut the tubes off right at the small blocks that bolt to the heads, then flip them over and bolt them back on the head. This effectively blocks the passage in the head. Doing that assumes you are removing the air pump. I'm ditching the air pump on mine.

Might want to also check out this site:

Lots of good information on that site. I read where a couple of guys were installing plugs in those holes on the rear side of the heads.

I did actually post on there. The only thing that concerns me is what happens to the pump. Does it run anything else. I know I can plus it and I think I actually have the plugs. Can I take the smog pump off too? A little less weight if I can get rid of it and not effect anything else. What all does that pump run?

they are just the smog pump air recirc lines. You can take them out and use a pipe plug to close them off. You can buy a smog delete kit from summit if you really want something there, or just take it off and buy a shorter belt. the air pump is target practice.

If you do decide to ditch them, a 5/8x11 bolt will thread in, you just need to chase the hole. Threads are already there, just covered in carbon. SB

Rvt will NOT hold up in there, and you probably cant get to it when it is in the car to fix it again. That is an exhaust passage. Use bolts, or freeze plugs.
