Behind my front bumper on the passenger side there is a black vacuum canister. It has two vacuum lines going to it...I've read on other forums that it's for the heat and A/C and for the cruise control. Neither my a/c nor heat works and my Jeep doesn't have cruise control. This is on a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer with a 4.0, auto tranny and it's 4x4(np231). Do I need this? I don't care about fixing the heat or a/c because I've never used it before on any of my other Jeeps and it doesn't have cruise control so what should I do with it? Thanks!

On my ZJ, behind the bumper is a black EVAP charcoal canister. I beleive it deals with fuel vapors, but not 100% certain.

Is it going to hurt anything if I take it out and plug the vacuum lines? Is it actually for the heat and air and cruise control? Thanks!

I don't think it has anytihng to do with the heat, air or cruise control. As far as removing it, like JC said, you will not pass emissions testing, but other than that, it should not run any different. I have also heard of people removing the canister and connecting the three vaccume lines and having success.

My XJ (later model) had a black plastic sphere, the vacuum reservoir behind the bumper on the pass. side. It was definitely not the evap cannister, but as others with early model XJs pointed out, you might be. I guess it is a vaccuum source for everything vaccum operated (HVAC controls and cruise); with an early XJ I would make sure 4x4 doesnt need vaccuum before removing it.
I relocated mine under hte hood when I ditched the bumper. I never thought to chase the lines down and see aobut gettin grid of it.

dont take it off it operates the 4x4. its what makes the fork slide and engage your front axle.

we usually relocate them to the pass side above the fender in the motor compartment

Evap charcoal canister. Mine is off, both hoses plugged. Works fine but will not pass emissions that way.

Went back and read the first post again. It's NOT the evap. Evap is on the driver side on the ZJ. It's the vacuum resevoir as Brandon and Tony said, my bad :( It sucks getting old :)
