I have a 92 XJ with the 4.0 I put a rustys 4.5" lift on it with 34x10.5x15 LTB's it has a throtle body spacer and a K&N air filter. I use it mainly for racing at little doo mud pit just wondering if there are any more cheap upgrades befor i start saving for gears

Save some more $$

Do rear axle swap (if you have the D35), re gear, install a LockRight all in one shot.
I regret not doing an a rear axle swap.

Or......

Lower temp thermostat/ electric fan upgrade. External cooler if it's an auto trans. I don't know how hard you race the engine, but it you wind it up a lot, leave the factory fan.

ahh little doo... I use to go out there all the time... I have a 8.25 axle 29 spline that would go well with that package.. 3.55 gears

GubNi had a better plan than mine.

If you buy 2 sets of gears, master install kits, carriers (if you gear 3.73 or lower??), and a LockRight, you'll have $900 or more wrapped up in that - not installed. I'm sure you can come across the pair of axles GunNi mentioned for less than that.

Don't bother to regear. Just swap in a D44 and 9" from a 77-79 Ford. They come with 3.5 gears. While you are there put a spool in the rear and a lock-right in the front. You'll beat them all.

Agreed.

Though I must say, I run the same tires with (slightly) more power on a welded 8.25 and a d30 with a lockright and alloy usa shafts and beat the absolute shit out of it with no breakage yet other than the tie rod and shit rusty's trac bar.

You should be able to get a set of axles for $400 to $500 and have them installed for about the same. I'd recomend to reuild the front for new seals. It's pretty easy and cheap.

i have a whole XJ w/ rear d44 welded (and I mean, REALLY welded) and 3.56 gears already... buy it, strip it, and resell rest...
