What tire to go with?

I need to replace the rubber on my XJ with something more aggressive. They are currently mixmatched 33x12.50. I was going to go with 35/36 but I think I've decided I'm going to stick with 33s because I don't really want to do any axle swaps or beef anything else up at the moment. (locked 30/35 combo with stock shafts)

All that being said, I'm looking for an aggressive off-road tire. One that will do well in mud and on rocks. It's mostly mud around my area but I do plan to wheel URE often. There will be very little highway use once the tires on are on the Jeep. I plan to trailer it to anything more than 15 minutes away. Also would like to do some snow wheeling this winter.

I've been thinking about the Interco TSL SX. Anyone have any other recommendations? Also, where's the best place to get the tires in the Charlotte area and why do you prefer said place?

What do you guys think about the Pitbull Rockers? They're about the same price as the TSL SX's.

I love the SXs on my CJ...offroad, they are awesome. The downside is that they are very heavy. I have a set of BFGs I use for mallcrawlin.

34x10.50 ltb's

Why 10.50s, whats the advantage over a 33x13.50 LTB? Is it because of stock axles? I do like the look of a wider tire, but I don't guess I'm stuck on that. I took a look at an older model of those today at 4 wheel parts and really liked them. I like the new model with the sidewall tread even better. I am definitely leaning towards these.

The guys at 4 wheel parts recommended the Irok over both the SX and the LTB, but I'm not sure I really like those. Not to mention I'd definitely have to step up to a 36.

X whatever on the ltb's
The 10.50s will fit the xjs wheelwell better and be easier on the stock axles.

i would go with the 10.50 over the 13.50 i have a friend with 33x13.50 on his xj and he took them off after awhile cause when he was wheelin and the xj was flexin they would eat up the outside of the finders but it depends on how much lift u have

Fenders are cut and I will cut more. This is strictly off-road. I'm rubbing the fronts of the fenders right now with the 33x12.50s but I plan to cut them more or just let them rub. Doesn't much matter to me. :)

The lift is somewhere between 4.5 - 6". I've been too lazy to measure.

im running 15x10

Unless you want to buy new rims you just had your decision made for you by running 10" wide rims. 10" wide rims will be too wide for the 34x10.5s, you will need to grab the 13.5s. The only time its a good idea to run a tire 1" wider than the rim (since the 34x10.5s measure 34x11.2 or so) is if its street only. Air down to wheel and you will greatly increase the risk of loosing beads.

I think my 33x12.5s are mounted on 15x8's. I used to have a set on 15x7's, that worked, but was a little too narrow for street use IMHO, the center tread wore pretty quickly, even at like 25psi.

IMO, the narrower 10.50s will be easier on the front axle... less pressure to turn than the 13.50s

Rims for YJ/TJ/XJ/ZJs are both abundant & stoopid cheap... sell the 15x10s and buy a set! If this is strictly offroad, use a set of OEM steelies. I've run a set of 33"x12.50 (both radials & now bias Swampers) on 7.5" wide rims for a LONG time without problems. As Tony said, might accelerate wear in the centers, but helps hold the bead when aired down...

x2 on the 10.5 wide tires being easier on the D30. Sounds like you're buying new, but good luck finding 33x10.5 in the used market.

The problem with the factory steel wheels is the 5" backspacing. I guess a 10.5" tire might be OK, but a 12.5 will less backspacing to keep it out of the fenderwells, control arms, tracbar bracket...

I'm not positive about my rim size but I'm guessing they're 15x10 as well. I wished I were the one that put all of this stuff on the jeep but I bought it like it is minus the parts I've added. I'll check the rims when I get home. The tires are not buldging at all so I suspect they are 10".
Here's a pic that shows the 33x12.50s and rims.

tires

I am not a tire pro,but think your rims are 8 in wide from the look of the pics.. If so I would go with the 34 10.50 ltbs .

I wouldn't know where to get any around here.

You would have to buy them online and have them shipped, http://www.treadwright.com/ is a popular supplier.

But in all honesty they won't perform any where close to a set of LTBs. I wouldn't say for 100 percent sure, but looking at your tires I would guess you have 15x8s. It should be stamped on the inside of the wheel, if you have a spare you could just take it off the truck and look at it. Other wise jack it up and take off one of the tires and take a look inside the rim.

If so then the 34x10.5 LTBs are the way to go. I see so many rigs (including friends I wheel with) that have the 34x10.5 LTBs it isn't funny. Its the new "34 LTB" trend so to speak. And for good reason, they are priced decently and perform great for that price. I opted for the 34x9.5 TSLs instead because they have more tread, and I am running 15x6 rims. But in your application the 34x10.5s are the way to go.

Thanks for the info! They're out of stock on the 33x12.50s, but I did find some tires for my Dodge. When the terra grapplers wear out I'll replace them with some retreads.

You guys are good! They are indeed 15x8s. As much as I'd like to have a wider tire I'm going with everyones advice and going with the 34x10.50 LTB. The extra height should give me a little more diff clearance too.

Then I'm gonna start saving again while I'm coming up with ideas for the XJ. I know I want to do a long arm upgrade, swap the axles, disc brake, coil spring conversion and chromoly axles. Not to mention full skids. Hmm.. Lets see.. $10k outta do it. :p

Hmm, now there's an idea. I thought about talking to Galloways, but was also considering the warranty at 4 wheel parts. Wonder if they do any warrantys?
