What tires can I use with stock 71 CJ5

My ride is factory stock, it even has the original tires though they were recapped about 25 years ago. I want to put mildly larger tires with out doing mods or making steering too difficult. Any one with an insight what works. Better yet experience with what doesn't.
Picture of "Precious" as she currently sits.
P.S. Time is an issue just finished feeding bottles to 3 baby boys, also need ideas for strapping three baby carriers in (probably not serious).
I do have a serious question regarding drive train, has 225 with T18 tranny and what appears to be a 18 transfer case with emergency brake on transfer but only has one shift lever. The pictures of similar transfer cases all show two levers. What is this?

It will depend on whether you just want to stuff the biggest tire possible under it, or if you are worried about travel and rubbing.
Not worried= 31x10.50

Worried=30x9.50

Keep in mind that 2 tires with the same numbers on the sidewall do not always equal the same size.

Put that idea out of your head until you a fullblown rollcage (tied to the frame)! Then and only then, you *might* be OK strapping 1 carrier to the passenger seat and the other 2 in the rear seat... mom will have to stay home or walk!

If you infact have a T18 (not sure if was even an option with the Oddfire V6), most likely you have a D20 transfer case... and the CJs all had the single "inline" shifter (where others had the PITA J-pattern). While easily adapted to "twin-sticks"... WHY would modify such a pristine CJ? :confused:

You probably have a T14 tranny. Is it a 3 speed or 4 speed tranny? There is a myth the T18 came factory with the 225 but for years it has only been seen in some paperwork or from a friend of a friend of a friend whose brother knew a person with one. You get the picture. Also try over at www.earlycj5.com you can find anything you need bout the jeep. And it is a very nice rig. :)

The older Dana 18 cases did have twin sticks...1 for 2wd/4wd and 1 for Hi/Lo range ... they're pretty old Skool but they are great for offset rear axles and hold up fairly well.

We been runnin ours behind Chevy Smallblock power w/ no problems for several years
now. :beer:

When I was in high School, I had a '71 CJ5 w/ 225V6, T14a 3 speed, Dana 18 xcase ...it had the single lever shifter....and...went everywhere I needed it to go after I welded up the rear D44...

Nice that you noticed - 4 speed!

I wondered if there would be a comment on the four speed tranny behind the odd fire. The previous owner told me that when he bought it new the dealer told him that it was the only one they had ever had in stock.
As for modifications, I want to put the original wheels complete with high tech hub caps back on it but would but will need to blast the wheels and have been told that I will need radial tubes to mount modern tires on the tube wheels. (input appreciated)
