What to look for when buying an XJ?

Probably going to look at one Saturday. I know nothing about XJ's, only TJ's. Looking for something a little bigger, with heat AC and electric windows...

what is a reasonable price on these? Seems its really hard to find one in decent shape. Was the 8.25 standard on these?

"they" say 99 is the best year to get. Its got the 29-spline 8.25 (most were 27 spline, I think 97 and up are 29). Its the last year for the HPD30 front.
XJs got the facelift with upgraded interior in 97. You were SOL if you wanted a cupholder before that.
As far as engines go, I would stick with the 4.0L, which doesnt narrow it down much; I bet 90% of what you'll find out there has a 4.0L. Early 4.0L's had the Renix (Renault-Bendix) FI system. In 91, the HO Mopar FI system was introduced. In 96, they lost some power due to OBDII, I think they changed the head. Maybe around 99 the put a new intake on to try and make up some power...my 95 has noticeablly more grunt than my 99 (same gear ratio, same wheel, etc).
 
I just sold a 98, 138K miles,2" lift,power windows,locks,tint,mag wheels,cold AC,alarm, remote start, clean interior, ran great and no oil leaks for $2,000

Depends on shape,condition,year,options...not a very good question. If you are looking for the 97-01 body style i like the classic models mostly because i hate the faded fender flares and love the color matched ones. expect to pay 3,200-5k for a really nice well taken care of new body.. Old style can vary from 250.00-3800

i don't see spending over 5k on any stock xj. There are many nice options in the 3k range
 
go with someone who owns an xj. do the normal checks, look at the oil is it dark ect. ask questions like when the last tune up ect. and as far as price, thats up to you to decide what a car is worth. I would sell my 97 XJ for $5k lifted 4.5 lift 170k miles, I bought a stock 99 xj 3 years ago $1,800 with 200k miles. I see xj's o the market all the time. thats my opinion.
