What type of Mufflers and Exhaust do you run?

I have a set of Black Diamond 1 chamber flowmaster knock-offs on 2 1/4 pipes exiting at a 45* angle out the back. Well the mufflers are a bit loud and obnoctious at times but the biggy is the tail pipes are too low and drag on the rocks. I've been thinking of changing to a 2 into 1 muffler and running a single 2 1/2-3" pipe over the frame and out the rear. That way everything is tucked up out of harms way. I've priced the Flowmaster and looked the MagnaFlows. What do you run or what is your opinion?

I have to use round bullet style turbo mufflers on my due to my anti wrap bar being in the way. I picked them up from a local muffler shop. The body of the muffler is 18" long. I really like the sound of them behing my 454 (soon to get a MPFI unit :D )
 
i have a 4.0 inline 6 with a borla header into a gutted cat and a flowmaster 40 with a turn down. sounds good for a 6

I have a 3 chamber Flomaster 3" input with 2 2.5 " outputs for fake dual exaust (dang emisions crap) is very quiet at idle but sounds good when you get on it
 
Dynomax ultra-flo welded.. To me, the perfect muffler. Keeps a nice tone, but quiet enough so that the average person can spot you. ALso, the case is kinda thick, mine has a few rock scratches on it, no dents. :D
 
hmmmm let's see,.... well they are kinda tubular and ummm maybe 24 inches long, and ummmmm rusty colored,...Ok rusty. used to be blue
 
Dynomax Super Turbo. Nice and quiet, but has a slight low rumble. I can actually hear myself think and it doesn't annoy the other wheelers when I'm in the woods.
 
A good old whatever-it-is where the guy who owned it before me had a glass-pack that sounded like a Harley. I took it to a local Muffler & Radiator place and got it replaced with... something that makes it quieter.
 
Uh, i think it came from the factory, except that the pipe after the muffler rusted and is now gone. But the muffler is still good. :driver:

3" with a 14ga summit welded muffler.

edit: opinions, hard to say as ive only had it running a short time, so far sounds good, no tail pipe but i think that will help on road. Sounds great at idle.. worried i may have that low drone sound at cruse speed...
 
I have a Flowmaster 40 series. Sounds killer(really low rumble) and is really beefy. It can take some abuse. I am running a high clearance y-pipe that goes in front of the oil pan and then goes into one straight back to the rear of the jeep.

Exhaust

AMC V8- Stock manifolds, no CATS,Flowmaster 50 series, 2 1/2 pipes, True Duals. That being said; sounds good short term, 3 day ride or long freeway gets loud!!

If I do it again 60 series, 2 into 1, 3 inch out the back, similar to spraypantmas's. Saw one with this setup at Down East Offroad. Nice idle tone, opened up nicely with heavy load or 4 barrels kicked in.
 
might want to just get something cheap and easy, like a glasspack. If you are gonna wheel it, you are gonna end up smashing it on a rock all the time anyway.

Maybe on something like yours, but that's an awefully broad statement..
 
That is why I'm redoing my exhaust in the first place. I want to tuck eveything up safe and sound, while routing it around my inboard rear shock mount.
 
Stock AMC manifolds..."custom" 2.25" tubes outboard of the frame into $20 worth of connectors into 2 glasspacks (from a 258 "dual exhaust" kit)...

Sounds decent at idle, sounds *really* good when opened up, but after a 3 day trip, I'm sick of the noise! However, my neighbor is a MAJOR d!ckhead (called the sheriff because our previous dog was barking and keeping him from his beauty rest... :mad: ), so I decided to keep them! Then brought the diesel home to clatter away for 20 minutes each morning outside his bedroom windows! :flipoff2:
 
Well since it's up to the top and we're not talking about much else:

The Blazer has a pair of IMCO Exhaust Silver-Line single inlet/single outlet mufflers tucked between the frame rails, then arches over the axle and angled dumps behind the rear wheels. Since it's an SBC it has some characteristic thrum and throb but very subdued.

The Frontier is still rocking the factory muffler but I did swap the rear cats for Magnaflow units for clearance and shorten and re-route the single outlet to tuck it up by the frame out of harm's way. I did not notice any difference in tone thankfully as I kind of enjoy quiet wheeling in the woods.
 
I guess its more of what exhaust I dont run.. :huggy:

Total BAMF or forum noobie, can't decide.

From my perspective the aftermarket really hasn't focused much on sound design. Sure many mufflers address some type of attenuation, but it's mostly on a case by case basis. For example, I had a HS friend who put a pair of 40 series flowmasters on a Z34 Lumina (remember those!). That thing had a neat idle/burble, but when that thing hit its resonant frequency, BB's in a coffee can could hardly describe the noise it made. I would gander that most companies with specific muffler designs built them around a single test-engine setup - so what may work on the venerable SBC might not fit the bill on a newer v6.

My favorite (homegrown) exhaust so far - flowmaster 3" y-pipe, tubing, 3" converter and 3" flowmaster super-40 on the 99 Dakota 5.2 I had. Soooo sweet with the manual transmission.
