What's the farthest you'll drive to go Wheeling

Just wondering how many people regularly take long trips to go wheeling. I don't think I can justify trips like going to Harlan (300 miles) or my cousin's in WV (400+ miles) even a couple times a year. Last time I went to Harlan I broke in the 1st 10 minutes and didn't have the parts to fix, so it was a wasted trip. :shaking:

If I could afford it I would drive to BFE.

I live in Myrtle Beach, so I am constantly towing 4-9 hours away at a minimum. Back before the 1 ton swap we'd go about 6-8 times a year (Harlan, Tellico, URE, etc.). John, Tracy, Drew and I, go to Moab (Area BFE too!) every other year. We're headed back out West to do the Rubicon and hit Moab on the way back, April of next year. The distance I have to drive is the reason I take so long with "my build", I take that extra time so I can afford to put some of the best parts I can get underneath..... I want to take every precaution I can, so I know I have better odds at a long and fun trip!

I will consider anywhere on the east coast, but mainly Harlan, Windrock, URE, The gulches, and Mnt City. I would like to visit Gray Rock, Sneedsville and some other places too.
The biggest draw back for me to go to some of these places is not the distance, but the time off from work.

i would go anywhere money allows.

currently i'm not even bothering taking the bronco out of the garage.

We did the 2800 miles to wheel Katemcy, Texas.. But that was a rather unique trip. Typically, I'm OK with up to 8 hours.

This year, not very far...

Next year... Harlan / WV / a few other places in TN....and MAYBE in 2011 or 2012 I will hit Moab or something similar.

I would really like to hit the Rubicon before it gets closed forever...after that, my guess is Mexico is gonna start being a hot destination based on the places in US getting closed.

Which...got me thinking about the Pan-American highway... that is a trip of a lifetime there...especially if you jump the gap and do the southern portion too!!

(Hard to believe a 54 mile section is all it takes to complete it so you could drive from tip of South America to the top of Alaska!)

Not sure what my ride would be for that trip, but something "Expedition" rated for sure... durn you Madmonk for getting me started thinking about this...

one time a year, 34 hrs to Moab. A couple of times a year 12 hrs. The rest of the time is usually 2-5 hours. On the long trips I make sure and take lots of parts.

No way I'd ever dream of going to moab. I think 6 hours is far enough.

You'd change your mind if you'd ever go, that place is a blast!

I'd drive 60 hours if I had to, just to go again! Completely different from East Coast Wheeling, and that's what makes it great. Less throttle, more technical in places, and some at BFE require more throttle and more guts haha

So Jeff B you in for next year?

I would like to go, ask me again in 8 months. Gotta see if my money is right.

Thanks

So far for me on the coast its Gulches... Looking at maybe doing some long distance runs after the YJ is done and I replace the tow rig with something newer..

I think it just depends on how often I do it.. I have been going to Rasuch Creek once a year now for the last three years and plan to go again next month. that is about 415 miles..

I usually plan to go to atleast 2 or 3 far rides a year..

but I guess furthest I have been was Arizona last week :) of course I flew out :)

If the wheeling is worth it I would drive 4 days to go somewhere. I could care less about the drive time. Towing my junk to PA this wknd(9hrs). Plan to go to OK this fall(16 or so hrs). Anything less than 9hrs I don't even blink at. I make that drive to PA 5x a year, usually after working a 12hr shift:driver:

ive always thought it would be cool to ship an expedition style rig to australia and take a jaunt through the outback.

You could get nearly the same experience driving the Mohave Desert Trail in Cali. It is a 3 day+ drive with no food, water, or civilization. Same thing for White Rim Canyon in Moab. It is 90 miles of desert canyon with no civilization in sight. You haul in everything for the trip.

I was spoiled for the last 6 years and only lived 5 1/2 hours from Moab, so we went several times a year.

It looks like 30 to 32 hours from Charlotte and the wife and I are trying to put together a trip in October. It would be leaving like Thursday night in hopes of wheeling Sunday through Thursday, possibly Friday then heading home hopefully in time for the late game on Sunday (NFL).

Well since I go about every 3-4 weeks and the nearest place that is worth my time is Harlan at 3 hours away, I drive. Gulches is 30 minutes from my house so that is a good place to test something before heading out. Typically I don't bat an eye at 3-6 hours. Have to budget more for 6-12 hours. After Moab this year thinking that next year might be a mix of Moab and the Hammers. Hopefully once I finish with school again I will start doing two long trips a year and then a bunch of local trips.

The Hammers was well worth the trip . We had 5 days of wheeling and had a blast . If you can eat out of a cooler and sleep in the back of your truck , you can save alot of money .

I will make the trip again for sure . The only regret I had was passing the Fordyce trail head along 80 and not stopping because it was under snow and I was on my way home .

I've driven as far as Superlift in Hot Springs Arkansas before, and that was before I had a tow rig and trailer. I'm not saying I'd do it regularly, but once in a while, why not? I'm usually up for one really long distance trip a year, sometimes two. I'm going down to Alabama for another wheeling trip in July with the guys from FullSizeBronco. It's well worth the trip IMO just to get a little variety in your wheeling life. It's really sad when you see people bitch that the places they wheel are getting boring, but they won't drive far enough to try new places either.

Their is alot of wheelin within 2-3 hours of me.Harlan,Gulches,Sneedeville,Royal Blue,Windrock,Tellico,Big South Fork, the sandmines.URE is a little farther away. For me it's more about my towrig. It has alot of miles on it and has always been reliable but you never know when it might give up the ghost.Gettin a 4dr F-350 with a 18 foot tag a long and a 1-ton Blazer home wouldnt be cheap.
If I had a new(er) towrig I would'nt be against goin to Moab if I could swing it.
