When is thick enough...

...for frame-welded mounting plates for rock sliders to weld onto?
I'm thinking 3/16, probably 3x4 (side arms are 1.75" sq). or is something super beefy like 1/4 necessary?

Well, it really depends on what you're welding it to. some frames are thinner than others. Most aren't going to be thicker than .120, so there's not much sense IMO is welding 3/8" to it.

That said, 1/4" is what I normally used.

I'm pretty sure it's .120. It's an 80s 4Runner, maybe somebody here knows.

I use 3/16" normally, with a gusset on the tube. I use .120 for the sliders most of the time.
