on a Dana 30, is it absolutely necessary to change the crush sleeve? I've got a '98 Dana 30 I'm swapping into my '93, and it's got a different yoke setup. I also read that I need to put an inch/pound torque wrench on the pinion nut to find out where it needs to be when I seat the replacement yoke?

*IF IT IS NECESSARY, HOW HARD IS TO CHANGE THE CRUSH SLEEVE? DOES IT COME RIGHT OUT?

Well the crush sleeve is on the inside of the diff. So to change it you would have to completely break it down pop out the ring gear and pull out the pinion gear, then take the crushed crushed sleeve out and replace. I wouldn't attempt it with out the torque wrench. It needs to be tight enough, but not too tight. I dont know what to torque it too, but i will find out shortly. Gotta swap the yoke on my dana 30 too.

The crush sleeve can be removed from the pinion side of the diff, IF you can get the outer pinion bearing off. Sometimes they are nearly a press fit, other times its a little easier. Once the bearing is off, the crush sleeve may be loose enough to pull off with your fingers, or it may have bit the pinion as it was crushed.

The right answer is yes you need to replace the crush sleeve. That said, I swapped the yoke on my rubi 44 w/out changing it and have had no problems, yet. It is a trail only rig though.
