I just used a piece of 2" -5/16" wall for a drive shaft. got it from a machinist friend. I'll ask him if he can get 1/2" and let you know.

Doubtful. And I really don't think I could make that kind of length "disappear." Have you tried Advanced Metals in Archdale yet? We use them for a lot of our odd tube needs at work, and they've really come through for us.
