My BF and I are here on vacation from Tampa Bay, FL. We couldn't help but notice how strong the jeeping community is up here, alot different from FL which is mostly just a bunch of stock JK's with windows up and a/c blowin and mall crawlers.

We have been throwing the idea around for awhile now about moving out of Fl, North Carolina is now top of the list. It is alot closer to home then Colorado, our other prospect...

What I'm looking for I suppose is suggestions on where we should be looking, it would be our first place? We'd like to be close to wheelin, but not to far from a city as well because we both have to work.
I currently work at Autozone, and BF is a full time mechanic.

Looking at about 90k to 160k.

Any suggestions?

The Triad area (Greensboro/Winston/Highpoint) is an hour from Uwharrie, and there are multiple mechanic jobs open in the area right now (Talk to Snappy)

Homes are affordable in the area, depending where you look.

I would stick with the Triad.Closer to wheeling, yet you still aren't too far from the beach if you want to see the Ocean.Plus work is plentiful and the homes are reasonable.

Probably closer to the mountains.

I live 3 mins from the beach at home and never, ever go. Ever. Haha. Florida sucks.

That's what I like to hear, thanks for your input. =]

NOT Jacksonville or fayatville they both are total shit hole filled with military!

edit: btw momma my avatar pic was taken in Ocala NF

Piedmont area...

Somewheere between charlotte/winston/gboro area....

(map shows Lexington?? wtf haha)

Statesville is where I call home

I agree with Triad area, Grew up down toward charlotte and its alright, But winston/kernersville area seems pretty nice to me.

I would agree with triad being from the asheboro area I loved it growing up there and being based in goldsboro really makes me appreciate where I grew up hahahaha!

BUT I also LOVE where my parents are from wilkes/Elkin county(foothills area) probably where Im gonna build my house on my dads ol homeplace when I get out of the military!

If you want to kinda be in the middle of the wheeling action I suggest some where around Hickory.
Rock Corps-Flats-40 min
BDB- The Farm-25 min
Mt. City-<2hrs
URE-<2hrs
Harlan-4hrs
Gulches-2+hrs
Brown Mtn.-35min

This will kinda put you in the middle of everything. As far as Auto Zone's we have plenty of them and I know the manager well and could hook you up w/ her maybe. Good luck.
Plus if you get hooked up w/ the right clubs some can take you to invite places only.

I would have to agree with Kenneth. although I am closer to most of where he posted, I am in Morganton. There are Auto Zones in every town with at least four stop lights! I am sure your company can help you in relocating to a place where you can find work. If not Auto Zone, we also have many Advance auto's, O'Reilys, NAPA's, and so on. Homes are a little cheaper in Burke County than they are in Catawba. Not sure about the market for auto Mechanics, but should be easy to look up. Feel free to check out all the clubs here. I will put a plug in for Carolina Trail Blazers. Check out our section here and learn about out 40th anniversary this coming year.
Might help to send you in the right direction if we knew a little more about your likes rig, and so on.
Welcome to this board, and I hope you get to make the move.

......here on vacation from Tampa Bay, FL. ......

I came up here for a vacation from Plant City, FL back in 1989. (day after Hugo hit) Moved up here in 1990 and have loved being up here. It was a bit of an adjustment because my weekend hangout was Clearwater Beach or the local spring.

Wherever you end up moving, I'm sure ya'll will like it. Where else can you move and be at the beach OR mountains in 4hrs or less?

Btw, have a sister in Tampa just off Hillsborough Ave.

i live up in the most western part of the state. the mountains are great. its hard to beat what we have.i lived in north idaho for 6 years and done a lot of snow wheeling.and we have 12 inches right now. home are fairly cheap. ashville nc is 40 miles away.east tenn. is just over the hill.

I live in Claremont, NC which is approx 2 hrs from Uwharrie, 2 hrs from Mt. City (Callalantee), 4.5 hours from Harlan and 2.25 hours from Goulches and will be putting my house up for sale near the end of January 2011. Not sure what price you're looking for but I have posted a link (if it works) to the GIS page for my home. I will be asking $225,000 when it goes up for sale.

Oops...just reread the original post and saw that you stated 90-160K...nevermind and good luck finding a place.

we just found out that NC does vehicle inspections, what in all is required to pass?? our main concern is the 97 TJ, which has full hydro steering ( double ended) it also has no fenders, and is on 42s.

the Cherokee has a few exhaust leaks (1991) no fenders and no cat, i do have a hollowed out cat i can put on but do they sniff the pipe or just check for OBD codes.

and last but not least, the 89 comanche which is a renix and under the hood says OBD exempt so does that mean im exempt from emissions?

do i need mud flaps?

Florida is kind of a do whatever state and get away with it as far as vehicles, you can drive down the road in a civic with no hood or exhaust with 1 flat tire and a 20 foot piece of 2x4 strapped to the roof and be fine

I think the 91 and 89 is just a safety inspections. The 97 is obd put as far as tires and lift i don't know.:driver:

it has 42" pitbull rockers with a 60/14ff combo 115" wheelbase and 18" travel airshocks (so ride height is kinda adjustable)

the xj has a 6.5" lift with 33s soon 35s

just worried about lift laws really, emissions shouldn't be too big of a deal

the tj is going to be trailed a lot but i would love to be able to drive it here and there

I think you would be fine... Sweet TJ btw.

Worst case on all but the 97, someone might could look the other way.

Welcome to the forum! And welcome to N.C. if you decide to move! They did tell ya that this is a Nudist 4 wheeling site right! Just saying!
