I want to beef up my TJ and I want disk in the back. I found a 91 ISUZU trooper with a 12 bolt 4:56 w/disk and a 9in out of a lincoln also with disk, gear unknown, both in the same wrecking yard. any advise on which would be better. I have a stock 4.0 and I want to run 35" tires eventually. The guy wants 300 for the isuzu and 200 for the 9 if I buy both. or 250 for the lincoln by itself.
Any help would be appreciated. thanks for your time.

I would go with the 9"

Definately the 9in. Also the 12bolt should be Dana 44 that will match your width for that TJ. Not sure if the 9in is fullsize or not. Thats probably an older Lincoln if it has disc on it if Im not mistaken. Big ole lead sled.

Yeah. 9 might be a litte narrow, or long. But if your up to fabing up the mounts go with the 9 for sure.

Why would you take an 8.8 over the 9"?

admittedly, i know nothing of lincoln 9" rears, so all these points might be wrong

8.8 matches his front axle in bolt pattern, and is most likely closer in width than a 9 inch??( once again, maybe not with a lincoln?)

also seems like brake parts and such would be easier to find for a newer explorer

can you buy non custom chromos for a car 9"?

8.8 is more than enough axle for 35s on a mild jeep.

biggest downsides to me would be c clips and the boat anchorness of them.

the 9" in the Lincoln is great and highly sought after because of the full width and disc brakes, but for use in a TJ, it'll have to be cut down, axles re-drilled, spring perches etc...

Thanks Bowtie, thats what i was thinking on the 9in. Alot of buddies i have look for these Lincolns to use in a Bronco

i am doing that same swap in my 95xj and i would use the isuzu axle and then just get wheel adapters and 456's for your front axle. or just a wagoneer 44.

There's also the isuzu corporate 12-bolt. Supposed to be awfully beefy but low spline count on the axleshafts. Pretty sure I'm putting one in my jeep. Drop out center section, very much like a 9" from the exploded diagrams I've seen.

I think most 12-bolts and isuzu 44s are about 2" narrower wms-wms than jeep axles, so you'll have to add spacers to get back to original track width, but that's no big deal as you can run spacer/adapters to get back to 5x4.5

Siksas is right on the money, I'm doing the same in my XJ, either 4.56s for the 30& adapter/spacers for the rear or swap in a 6 lug DSD 44 up front.
