Which winch…?

Finally getting back to reinstalling a winch on the JLUR.

I have 2 options. I already own both.

1. Reassemble a fixed 9.5ti and reinstall? Plus have to purchase a mew remote?

2. Install a cheapo NIB Badlands 12k?

Again, I already own both but would have to buy a new remote for the Warn as my old one went with my buggy when I sold it. The remote alone is half the cost of the Badlands winch.

I have steel cable on the badlands and synthetic on the Warn, but either winch option will result in a synthetic rope and put the steel cable on the other winch.

So, what say ye?

I’m thinking the Badlands because I rarely use the winch and it’s pretty much ready to go. The Warn is going to take a bit of work to put back together and make sure it’s operational. Realistically, it could probably use a good cleaning before reassemble, which = more work. And I’m hoping everything is operational afterwards. May need a couple more parts.

The badlands will be fine until you get in a situation with a lot of winching, then you'll wish you invested in the 9.5ti. I had a 10k Engo on mine until a windrock trip down trail 21. Then I went looking for something with faster line speed.

One that works checks my boxes, I don't duck hunt. I could care less about a remote. I'd most likely always run it by myself so I see no need in walking away and spooling at the same time.
I err on caution every time I have ran one so no need to go back and forth or whatever quickly.

Warn for the overlander street cred. :D

Can you get a conversion plug and use a badlands wireless remote on the Warn?

Unlikely. Warn uses some odd propriotory plug style.

Only option would be to cut the wires and install a generic 6pin trailer wiring plug or something easier to find.

Rather than spending time and $ to Frankenstein the plug, $90 for a warn plug and I’m good.

I used the nicer HF Apex wireless kit (Wireless Winch Remote) on my XD9000i, and all I had to do was jump 1 wire in the solenoid box. I believe it was making a switched ground to constant ground like the older Warns. I liked that solution because the Warn remote will still work, and the Badlands is only $60 with a nice case and a wired or wireless option.

Here you go:
Did a little tinkering last night, and it was super easy. I might post a something in the tech second with more details, but all I had to do was open up the solenoid cover on the XD9000i and run a jumper from the red constant ground (12v -) to the brown switched ground so that all 4 solenoids had a constant ground. Thats it. Pretty darn easy. :D

Negative, sits too high, will cause excessive engine heat on hard pulls, there us a reason most modern jeeps have low winch mounts or reseced
Yeah, because 99% of the winches available are less expensive planetary gearbox with brake inside the drum and thus the majority of bumpers are made to fit those. An upright winch has the benefits of a narrower install, no heat on the drum when braking (which is a concern for synthetic rope), and a faster unloaded line speed, but the "last winch standing" 8274 costs more than most people want to spend. They can be mounted down in the bumper or up on top on a mounting plate since they mount foot forward like a planetary.

If engine cooling is a concern for an overloaded vehicle with larger, heavier tires, possibly incorrect gearing, taller stance with more wind resistance, and too much extra weight from bumpers, winches, and gear then upgrading the engine cooling system is in order. I upgraded the radiator on my Frontier since it weighs 2400# more than it did when stock and the engine works a lot harder all the time. The only time I had a cooling issue was when the fan clutch decided to quit, and it has an 8274 on the front built into the bumper.
