i'm a sophomore at state... the pros and cons are depended on the person. I grew up a state fan so I love it here. what are you trying to major in?

I just graduated in December, and i have nothing bad at all to say about the place, except that i dont like raleigh.....

What would you be going there to major in? I was in mechanical engineering, and would not have been anywhere else. As far as other majors, if i were doing something something different, i probably wouldnt have been there. I most likely would have gone to app, because i had many many more friends there, and i like the area and campus better.

As far as the education you would recieve, i am totally satisfied with mine.

A friend of mine majored in ID and Mechanical Engineering...and he now designs pumps for some company, makes a ton of $$$, and is getting his PE soon...
I majored in Civil Engineering, and then worked at the university for several more years in the facilities area before moving back up here. I really like the place.
However, I was back before they moved the engineering school over to the styley new Centennial Campus, so I've never been over there...
but I can definitely recommend a NCSU Engineering degree - well respected in the job market.
good luck, and go Pack!!!
:)

I got my masters degree in engineering (comp sci focus) there. I was in a different situation than a lot of students in that I had 10 years of industry experience when I started my degree. I am really happy with the school. It was just the right mix of theory and current industry techniques, exactly what I was looking for.

This isn't specific to state, just some old man advice. Make friends that take school seriously. If you transfer in, find a group of guys that focuses more on Halo, Guitar Hero, or drugs more than their classwork then you'll have a real hard time doing well. It's not that hard to get an undergrad degree if you avoid falling behind by doing your work on time all the time.

Good luck

School of Design? It is really good. BUT... Prepare to lose all skin color and start buying black. Oh, and get used to the look of bricks, State gets them cheap and uses them for everything.

How bout the group that does nothing but work on trucks all the time . . . . . and still somehow I'm graduating with a degree in Business Finance with a minor in accounting and got a 3.4 gpa last semester . . . . seriously I should be getting a degree in Custom offroadness

UNC Charlotte is a good option too. I graduated there in 86 before the growth of the school exploded. I am hearing that many of those who don't get a seat at State opt for UNC as their alternative. My brother graduated from State as a civil engineer. I am a mechanical engineer. We have compared educational notes over the years and didn't find much difference. State does have the reputation. UNC is catching up. Now has, many Ph.D. degrees and awesome new facilities. You may want to look at the Nascar integrated mechanical degree if that is in your line of interests. The campus is beautiful, solid brick like state, and the Concord area has lots to offer as well as Charlotte. I work in Raleighwood and I don't like it.....

i graduated from ncsu with a b.s. in education. as far as academics, there aren't really any cons. depending on your exact major, you're going to get one of the better educations in the state. you certainly can't go wrong coming here for design/engineering. the only thing i can really think of is class size and the teacher to student ratio is probably going to be a change. imo it's not a deal breaker by any means, though.

from a social standpoint, it's no party school but the scene is definitely going to be better than asu. to me, it's just right. there's enough to get into if you want, but not so much it's going to really distract you from your work. also, it's nice to be in a place that's not just a college town.

yeah, the whole college town ONLY scene is really depressing me. I dont like the fact that to go anywhere, mostly means ending up in an apartment, which means cops WILL show up.

Question, hows the crime down in Raleigh. I havent been there since I was like 5 years old. My Jeep is a soft top, and Im worried about it getting sliced and diced for my CD player or something of that matter..

You gotta be careful, for the most part its alright but dont be stupid and leave anything expensive in your jeep

I had someone slash 3 of my 40" tires on my Z71 back a few years ago, otherwise I havnt had any issues . . . .

i wouldnt expect the cops to be much better in raleigh...... they love handing out nuisance tickets....... and ive been to some killer house parties in boone where the cops would simply ask people to move cars parked in the road... that wouldnt happen in raleigh...

I'm a first semester Junior now at State and wouldn't trade state for ANY other school. I'm here for the business management program as well as a minor in spanish. I'm even thinking of a double major with Accounting, but we'll see.

Raleigh isn't a crappy college town like other schools (EZU...:flipoff2:) and around campus there really isn't any crime that i've noticed. It's decently patrolled by police and the apartment complexes all are quite secure.

You really can't beat a degree form NCSU either, they're highly respected across the board. Of course the engineering and design school everyone knows about, but we've also got one of the biggest up and coming business schools as well. Within ten years they're moving the whole college to Centennial campus because it'll be so big.

thats what im hoping for. Im thinking the minimal extra expense NCSU will cost me will in the end be worth it, letting me get a better job with a more respected degree.

Ive never been down there though. What all is there to do in Raleigh besides drinking and all that? Im getting a bit tired of all that jazz.

my sister went there for her masters deg. (clemson grad) and now she teaches there. She seems to like it.

I just graduated in December with a degree in Accounting. I think my education was one of the best and don't regret going there at all. I originally went for ME and decided it wasn't for me.

The campus grew on me but the city never really did. Of course the surrounding area is mostly low income and not that nice but it isn't but 2 mins to cary. I think the party atmosphere is pretty good. Always something to get into. And you get to be part of a school that's sports extend beyond a football team that plays in a division that is merely a high school division with bigger players. :rolf: :lmao:

Ha, no that's just where ya'll live.:flipoff2: The other side of hillsborough is very nice and pricey.

I never had any problems with crime while I was there. I had friends who had cars broken into, etc. but it's mainly limited to apartment complexes. Those are going to be prime targets anywhere.

The local government and police have definitely cracked down on parties in apartments/homes and some of the "traditions" that ncsu used to have like the brent rd. party, campout, tailgating, etc. You don't want a nuisance ticket, it's a pain in the ass and they give them out freely. So, I would suggest living somewhere that isn't a prime target area for them and then just going out to bars, etc. when you get old enough.

If all goes well, I'll be transferring there a semester before my 21st, so it should work out well. Do they have like any thing like UNC Charlotte has concerning the Greek community, like a greek village or anything? If so, is there an ATO house down there?

How far is it from Chapel Hill? The girlfriend is going to be going there next year.

bout 30 min to UNC, and yea they have frat court, then they also have another mini area like right beside my apartment complex, dont know about ato specifically thou . . .

As for crime, just don't leave anything visible in the Jeep...crooks like to hit the apartment complexes and parking lots, but pretty much they look for easy targets - stuff left out on the seat, etc...
Raleigh has a great music scene, pretty much any genre you're into...lots of places to see bands from tiny hole in the wall joints to of course Walnut Creek ampitheater and the concert hall downtown. There's also a big arts scene downtown - lots of galleries, etc if you're into that - my wife always liked the First Friday gallery walk, where galleries are open late on Friday night, and you can just walk around to lots of them...I enjoyed it because there are also lots of bars open late on Friday night downtown.
:)

Okay cool. Apparently the chapter there was formed in '05, so I doubt they'd have anything yet..
