Who wants to up the ante and go with Unimogs?
I have the opportunity to bring some to market, if it turns out there actually is a market. I don't have all the details yet. I assume they are the 404 version. I do know they are used take-outs from a refurb program, crated and stored in the dry and guaranteed good. Prices should be around what Rockwells and one-tons are going for now.
This is for real. If there is a demand, I can make it happen. Spread the word, ask around, and post up your opinions.
Also, what kind of action is on Pirate about these things? I have not paid the $20 to use their search function. Are they gaining in popularity or are they still a novelty. Are people hunting for them?

google this (without the quote marks): "unimog axles site:www.pirate4x4.com/forum"

 trade ya a set of tons

Fwiw, there have been a few people that have looked into importing a lot or lots of them and have decided it wasn't worth it. They are definitely gaining popularity though, but I would look into the larger and more desirable volvo/mog portals rather than just the 404's.

:edit: There would be just as large of a market for portal parts, as there aren't any great sources in the US.

Volvo portals are D44 based. Larger would be the Unimog 406/416 axles.

Parts for Mog axles are always available through Mog dealers. 404 parts are relatively cheap. You'll spend more bucks for parts for the 406/416 axles. As an example, new wear rings and seals for the outer portal seal are around $250 each.

whats a realistic tire size with 404s, say on a 4,000# rig.. ?
42" would be reasonable on a 404 axle. If they have been in storage, I would plan on seal replacement across the board. The nice part is you get a locker from the factory.

Right right. Substitute "volvo" for u1000/1300. That's what I was meaning to say. Are there any unimog dealerships in NC?

That is a Sterling dealer, they usually have a few new badass mogs in stock.
Those are new Mogs, and they will not support the older ones. The dealers I mentioned are ones that handle older Mogs and their parts. The closest one is outside Atlanta...Eurotruck Importers (guy's name is Sean). Google and you'll find him. One of the best in the country is Eurotech Services out of Oregon (guy's name is Jim Ince). You have to call. Email is last on their list to respond to. Fax is slightly better; call and you'll get service. They know everything there is to know about Mogs and their parts.

No set price, yet. I'm working on that.
I want to keep the price as low as possible in the interest of moving them. I don't want it to turn into a long term investment.
I see a guy in TX offers them for $2000/set on fleaBay. I wonder how fast they are moving.
It would love to be able to hold the price around $1500/set because that seems to be about what the 1tons and Rocks are bringing.
The 404's seem to be the better way to go (vs the 406, etc) for weight, parts availability, and the ability to run normal rim diameters with a disc brake conversion.
From what I'm reading, the 404's are as strong or stronger than a D70. Gear ratio would be 7.56 and they come with a mechanically (orig cable, commonly converted to air) actuated locker. They do require a kit to eliminate the torque tube and run a normal driveshaft flange and that looks to be around a couple hundred ea.
Like I said, this is research to determine the feasibility of this, but wouldn't it be cool to have a nice supply of these at reasonable prices!?
Lots of Mog axle build-ups here...

I want a steer axle to do my rear steer, and may take another set if the price is right, My buggy with mogs is on my website. I run 42's and have had no trouble being hard on them. Also if you can get a pair of U1300 steer axles let me know

Thanks, Nick

price to get them runable.

You guys have been throwing around several prices some of which include required rebuilding/manditory mods to run them; drive flanges, brake fabrication ect.. I'm ignorant on mog tech in general but on the whole it seems they are expensive to set up even after their purchase price. What's a man going to spend getting them ready to run, not incuding suspension set up? I'm interested in them due to other benifits they offer compared to Rocks but do they incur alot of extra cost to get them going compared to other over the top set ups?

they typically require the kit to convert the stock torque tube driveshaft over to a flange so that you can run them in something other then a mog... also they are drum brake factory, so unless you want to keep that, they require a disc conversion which can get rather pricey... also they require wheels with a good deal of offset and the odd mog bolt pattern to help protect the portal box...

I know Nick at No Limit Offroad and Jim (rockmafia) are running them, so they might be able to help you answer this question...

and actually im suprised at the amount of ppl that are interested in these, as compared to spend the same $$ or less on rockwells or tons... even though they do have some nice benefits

I run the eight lug conversion with F350 brakes, and pinion conversions with 1410 ujoint flanges. I also have H1 wheels with 2" spacers. AndHave some bolt-on pinion guards i made. If you are interested give me a call and I can get you prices on everything you want.

Well... more info came in today... these are not 404's as I originally thought, they are from the US military 419 SEE (Small Emplacement Excavator)... a BAD ASS little high-speed backhoe/loader based on the 406/U900. I have seen these in person and they are freakin shweet.
awww.primeportal.net_images_odds_ends_see_thumbs_see.jpg

What does that mean? From what I can gather, they are stronger than Rockwells (and heavier, too), come with air-actuated lockers and disc brakes, and a 6.5:1 ratio. Also these are not take-outs but REBUILT units.
In light of this new info, I'm having my doubts about keeping the prices down, but I'll try.
I'm not gonna give up yet... unless nobody wants them.

I much rather have those than 404's, esp if they were rebuilt and not worn out, like a takeout axle from one of those would be. Plus they come with disk brakes.
