I thought I read here where someone had a tone generator? for finding wireing shorts in cars? Im wanting more information on that.

I haven't bought one yet, but they are in one of the tool catalogs I get - The Tool Warehouse

I need to get the little 12v probe/supply thing first, after watching a mechanic using it on Nicole's car.. WHAT a time saver!!!

The stuff I work on is extremely twitchy about voltage spikes and such. I was wondering how the generator worked.

Anyone got a link to one of these tone generators? I am wondering why the same tone generator I use at work to trace/verify CAT5 couldn't be used to do the same thing. It is the same principal no?

the tone generator is the ECT-2000,

the test probe is the Power probe 2 or 3, I have the Power Probe II, works well, but I don't use it very often.

Buy them online not on the tool trucks, thetoolwarehouse.net has really reasonable prices and is at LEAST 40% cheaper than tool trucks if not more.

Good question bro... got one of these pigs in my kit also. Guessing it's different functionality though?

the progressive tone tracker yopu posted is IMHO the best of its kind on the market.

However it works a little different than the style posted. But with a little creativity can be used very similarly.

I have both, and like being able to induce voltage or ground...
Even in non auto applications.

progressive tone tracker is used by telephonemen I use one all day long + they do work good for installing car steros and tracing down cables

the only difference the model linked to you can induce voltage or ground at any point. So if you wanted to have a few more options while testing......

Plus the progressive generator has a built in "Short tester" or continuity check

Whats the voltage range of these tools I didnt see it in the links. Does the ECT-2000 use an internal batt. or 12V power to run. Looks lke a real time saver but most of my work is 36-72 volt if its 12V only it wouldnt do me much good.
