ok my ? is will a 8.8 bolt right in to a xj i measured the spring plates and from my measurments the 8.8 spring pads are only bout 1/2 wider will my springs move out a 1/4 on each side to mount or will i have to move them thanks

nope

If you haven't already bought the 8.8, get a 44 off a Comanche. You'll have to swap out the perches, but the width, bolt pattern, and pinion yoke are all the same.

wonderful! thanks for the info..
However I think you should vary more examples to your writing much more interesting !

If you are pulling the 8.8 from an Explorer, you will have to cut off the spring perches and shock mounts. Then weld new ones on, in the correct positions. You will also have to install wheel spacers to push the wheels back out to original position. I put 5/8 spacers on my XJ. There are some excellent threads available on pirate, to assist you.

:shaking: not a good idea mine died long ago.

Must be an aberration. I've flogged the tar out of mine and its still kicking, loads of people beat them on 35s-36s and do fine.

Strength is not a big limitation for that axle, gearing and aftermarket support are the weak points.

In my shop right now I have a 44 I'm swapping in, only because the whole axle was cheaper than I could get r&p for the 8.25. I honestly don't feel like I'm putting a much stronger axle in.

Compared to the effort involved for either 8.8 or mj44, if the OP doesn't intend to go for big tires or power the 29 spline 8.25 is plenty of axle.

Now a question, are you sure yours was 29 spline? I've heard of 27-spliners making it out to the public even after the redesign...

the 8.25 is a much better choice IMO for the cherokee. why swap in an axle that grenades left and right in factory applications?

I couldn't tell ya... Why not swap in a proven rear end for up to 35-36" if its half as much as the others before perches & shock mounts, is a straight bolt in and cheap to put discs on?

I recently sold my 29 spline 8.25 with ZJ discs for $150....

In this area you aren't going to come close to having either of those axles installed and with the wheels spaced and the new shock mounts on for under $300... That axle I sold is ready to rock after the hour it takes to hook the axle up and bleed the brakes.
