Just curious, who gives money to the guys/gals on the side of the road at intersections that have card board signs with something to the effect of "Unemployed, need help, God Bless"?

what I have done in past was offer to go buy them a sub at jersey mikes, subway, etc

to this day they have never taken me up on it.. wonder why?

Some of the folks here in Raleigh that panhandle have better clothes on than I do and I am coming from work. I have given them money is the past but now you can't tell who is real.

I imagine some do need, but, most don't. Years ago when I drove a cab part time I would pick them up from a hotel, and take them to the exits, the wad of cash they had would choke a horse!

Will work for food?? Always wanted to show them a big onion and say paint my house, or mow my yard.

Years ago at a Hardee's I was running, had a guy come in, sad story, hungry and so on, so I asked if he was willing to work for his lunch. Told him I would give him anything he wanted if he would clean up the trash on my parking lot, and sweep up the cigarette butts. He agreed. I give him a brand new dust pan and a broom,...............have yet to ever see them again.

Personally, I ignore them.

I usually ignor them,

I have tried to put some to work on the carnival, "dallar a day & all the popcorn & cotton candy you can eat"

Never got any of them to do anything.

I usually dont when they have a sign, Especially when their in the exact same spot all the time... just seems like their not trying to go anywhere to better themselves, then again if they maybe live there, but lets see how your living... i think thats why most people are in as bad shape as they are, Living Beyond Their Means... trade in that gas guzzler IF YOU CANT AFFORD IT!! (my mom is always catching hell cause of her Excursion, but she can afford it and the gas in it...) if your going to Starbucks or buying booze or smokes, and fast food... thats gotta go, thats THOUSANDS of dollars a year... its stupid!

The best is when your filling up at the station and they give you some sob story about being out of gas, and have to get to a hospital in another town, and theres no vehicles in sight, and they want cash money... offer to ride out to their car with my jerry can and all of a sudden thats no good... wonder why...

the worst is jeepin in another country, having limited cash on hand (food money), and calculating not enough fuel, pulling over and not having your bank card approve (the bank will cut off your card when you make purchases outside of the area you told them you were going... just cause im in NB does not mean im not going to go into Quebec and i mean its right across the river from where i grew up) somehow i managed 28mpg out of my jeep on my way home! i was CRAWLING but i got home...

I would have accepted a Jerry Can from anybody at that point lol

I have to admit one time I did give a guy $5 because his sign said "why lie, I need beer"

My ex and I used to fight over this. I would roll down the window and tell them to get a job etc.... She was their dream citizen and gave everytime I wasn't with her :shaking:.

yeah i think their more likely going to get what they want if their honest lol

i had a guy in Greenville ABC walk up, hesitate, and said "hey man, not gonna lie, i need a fifth after the day i've had... think you can help me out..."

how can you say no to that? I'VE BEEN THERE

When I first moved to Raleigh I gave spare change to a few. It didn't take long before I realized it was always the same people with the same stories. How many times can your car break down and your wife and daughter are waiting in it? How many times can you have just come here for a construction job that didn't pan out and your boss left you stranded in Raleigh?

Then I realized it's not just the Raleigh bums that are like this. Everywhere you go, most of them have been telling the same tired story to the same people day in and day out. There are homeless shelters where they can sleep and food banks where they can eat.
More than likely the person who actually "fell on hard times" has family and friends that would help them out. If I lost everything today I feel pretty confident that I could go crash at one of about 15 people's houses. I'd expect it to be hard work, but I could get back on my feet even if it wasn't as comfortable of a lifestyle as I had before.

There's a reason they are on the street. They either choose to be or they messed up so badly (or are messed up so badly themselves) that nobody will help them. In either case I don't want to fund their lifestyle. If they need mental help then they should get it. Otherwise, they're on their own. There is a certain freedom that they enjoy that I do not get to enjoy. If that's what they want out of life then I don't look down on them for having chosen it, but I'm still not going to help fund their life anymore than they are helping to fund mine.

The last one that actually pulled my strings a little was in G-Boro. I felt like he might be genuinely in need of help and I was about to grab lunch at Subway. I told him I didn't have any cash because I do everything on my debit card, but I offered to grab a footlong and split it with him. That's when he told me that "what he really needed" was for me to go in the convenience store next to Subway and get him a bottle of wine and a pack of cigarettes.

5keepers, there was a guy at 540 and Creedmoor with that same sign. I gave him a dollar. He's the only one I've ever given it to.

One guy back in Greensboro was on the corner and he looked like he had it together. I asked him what was up and he said he just lost his job and wasn't able to find a new one after several months. Wife just had a kid, he didn't know what to do. We actually took him down and bought him dinner and a big box of diapers for his baby. He was really appreciative too.

Has anyone else been accosted at a highway rest stop? I've had several instances lately of someone "just trying to get home" and need gas money. That seems to be the new thing.

I agree Fart...

I went back to Canada, on a whim, i was planning on camping and crashing in my jeep (since my air mattress fits in the backseats) a few hours after being there, i had a place to stay and a job... Not making Electronic Security money, but still gave enough i could eat well and put gas in the Jeep and was good to go...

it was a friend i hadn't seen in 8 years! no contact with him and boom i practically had it made... told him my plans and he offered me a room at the house he was renting... (then ended up getting kicked out because of my dog, rottie mutts are not small dogs, and if the neighbour is afraid of dogs, you cant get much scarier LOL)

The beggers here on wendover near 40 make at least $100 a day! A while back one of the newscasters dressed as a bum and at the end of the day he had lots of cash! It was about $100 and that was over 10 years ago!

dude that's been me!!!

so would you loan me a few bucks for gas to get home?

Theres a guy near me who holds a sign that says need money for food! he parks his car down the road in the Food Lion parking lot. and drives off after the day is done. someone i worked with offered to take him to eat and he said NO. Offered him a job he said NO he makes about 20 bucks a hour if not more just standing there. He said ppl give him $8-$10 when they give him money. Thats fucked up if u ask me .

I always eat as I drive. (Probably worse than texting) But I've pulled up MANY of times with food and always offer some. I have yet to be taken up on the offer.
One time a guy actually inquired on what kind of chips I was eating and declined when he saw they were plain Ruffles. I'll never forget. Times are good for the bums!!!

I never give money. I knew a dude personally that begged and he only bought beer with it. A friend of mine found him about dead from dehydration in his little building from only drinking beer, dragged him home with him and literally nursed him back to life. Dude drinks water while out in the heat now.

He told us he usually made around $100 in a full day. But said most areas there's more than one bum and most don't get along and have to divide intersections into shifts.

My friend that took the dude in is pure nuts anyways and I wouldn't hold anything past his good hearted crazyness. My friend moved back to Tennessee last week after getting laid off. I probably won't be checking up on homeless dude so hopefully he learnt his health lesson?

i was at wendys in sailsbury and a guy came up and said let me get some money! I said why ? He told me he needed money to buy his family food. i said ok come in ill buy u 10 burgers. he walked off:confused:

Give to the local charities. They're more likely to go for food for someone who really needs it. In Raleigh, the priests that live downtown at Sacred Heart try and help folks as needed. (They get families in from the greyhound depot).

The other day I was driving down a 4 lane highway and a truck was in the slow lane and I was in the fast lane. It was obvious he wanted to get over into my lane so he sped up. As did I. He kept flooring his raggedy Ranger to try to get ahead of me. This went on for miles and he finally got in behind me. At the next light, we both turned into Lowes(where I was headed) and he gets out and asks me for gas money because he needs to get back to Charleston, which was 2 hours away.

This thread reminds me of-

Two Mexican panhandlers were on opposite corners at a busy intersection, holding their signs and putting money in their bags as the passing motorists handed it over. When the day was over, they got together and compared their respective takes. The first one show the other a bag of one dollar bills. The second Mexican showed his amigo a bag full of ten dollar bills. The one with the tens said, "Why did you just get dollar bills? Let me see your sign." It read: Homeless, Broke, Hungry. Please help. God bless. "Let me see your sign," said the first one. It read: I just need $10 more dollars to get back to Mexico.
