winch help pleaz

im looking at an older model warn 8274. any opinons on this style winch? should i get it or stay away???

I don't think I have ever heard anyone say they didn't like an 8274.

also what would be a decent buy on one of these. the one im looking at is in good condition and works good minus it dosnt have a remote, it has to be hard wired to a toggle.

Not sure exactly. It's probably 20 years old though! Works like a charm. Got it used two years ago for 4hundo. I thought it was a good deal. Mine came with a mounting plate and remote too!

What motor is on it makes a big difference, too.

The original motors were like 1.5hp and 2.5hp. The 8274-50 uses the 4.6hp motor, which pulls a lot better. If you really want an upgrade, you can put the new 6hp motor on it, too.

Any of them will work, but the higher hp motors will pull faster and harder.

How can I tell which motor I have on mine?

mine is off a factory option 78 cheif so im guessin ill have the lil motor. but that should pull my xj fast enough for me.

IIRC, I have a 1983 model 8274. I have been abusing it since late 2000 with no problems (other than corrosion on the electrical terminals, really just a maintenance thing).
