Ok so I've never heard of anything like this happening before and it just blew my mind. 3 months ago I bought a 2001 grand ch limited loaded with the selec trac. Basically I was the happiest person for finding one especially at the price. So I get a call today from the dealer. I had called them the week before regarding the fact my registration still hadn't come. They don't have a title for the car. They say it was lost by the dealer they got it from and have been trying to get it. So basically I've been driving a car for 3 months with no title. They have claimed that they are going to remedy this by finding another similar vehicle and trade it out to me. Well I just put a new cd player, changed the tranny filters, all fluids at stealership prices, etc. So basically I've put alot of $$$ into this jeep and now its worthless. Should I contact a lawyer asap or how hard of ball should I play with them? How much crap could they get in for this?

keep the jeep you got what if they give you some piece of:poop: i would make sure i come out on top

I would love to keep it but theres no title and no way to get one from what Ive been told. Something was said about the old owner can't be found or something. Basically it all sounded like bs to me.

thats bs y would the dealer ship buy a vehicle with out a title.
why cant they file for a lost title if they are a dealer they can get a title keep on them dont let them bs you around

Years ago my parents bought a new toy 4wd pick-up and traded in their 86 4runner on it.They had a similar problem with the title and it wasn't until the new owner of their old 4 runner sued them for the title that they found out the owner of the lot was embezzling.
I had a teacher who paid cash for a new Corolla and it took him 2 years to get the title.
When it was all said and done their was numerous dealins like that.

Shouldn't they be able to apply for a "lost title" or whatever just like the rest of us? I wouldn't give them the Jeep back without a judge ordering it. It's typical dealership BS...I really hope you come out alright with this.

Def don't play with them.
They screwed up, make sure they realize that.
Actually what they did is *illegal*
Tell them flat out, their option is (1) get a title or (2) provide something newer/nicer to ensure compensation for your time/effort/silence.
Otherwise you will be going to the press. Local news loves this shit.

Just got off the phone with them again. They claim theres no way to get a lost title b/c the title was never xfer'd. Basically they fubar'd and pulled a big illegal ut oh. I will def post the name of the dealership shortly but don't want to quite yet until I see whats gonna happen. And ^ I def thought about contacting wral or someone and seeing if they'd rip them up. Just couldn't have come at a shittier time. I'm already knee deep in lawyer bills on a custody/seperation battle and then this.

just tell them flat out if they want the car and to keep you quiet, that a "comparable vehicle" includes everything you have done in the meanwhile, and if not, it's time to go public.

i'd contact a lawyer. you can give them a call and ask for FREE! just see what they say.
what they did is very illegal and they realize that. i would demand something of a much greater value than what you paid for or else your contacting your lawyer and the news channel. they will work with you if they dont want a bad name. but dont budge under there terms.
i am going thru a similar situation. i bought a truck from a chevy dealership, 3 weeks later they get bought out. well they FAILED to contact my insurance agent and file my paperwork for me. so i have been driving around for over a month w/o any insurance! WTF! I also got it in the contract for a new set of tires and i am getting the run around on that deal.
good luck!

get a lawyer before they do! Dig up the paperwork of the transaction right away. They WILL come up with something better for you because they made a big illegal ut oh. Fight them for everything for your inconvenience.

Remember, posession is 99% of the law, especially since you paid for the vehicle and should have all the paperwork.

Guys this may *not* be illegal.
It is not uncommon for dealers/wholesalers to buy vehicles with paper in process.
If someone else holds a lien they can stop the transfer.

If you sunk money into the vehicle before you had obtained title...you may be SOL....

id PM 1983bronco or cass92lx50 or one of the other local dealers and get their advice....

Lawyer up and make them buy you something even more balling. It's illegal in NC to sell a vehicle and not deliver the title. I did it like 3 years ago. I had went to court over like 5 times. I got charged with failure to deliver title and it cost me like 800 bucks. The people could have taken my to civil court and made me buy the car back at pretty much whatever price they wanted......lucky for me they didn't. Damn twin turbo 3000gt!

Enjoy your new ride...

Good luck. I would think a newer Jeep in comparable condition would suffice.:shaking:

Requested to only relay any information about this via email and told them I would no longer discuss this matter on the phone without an email beforehand

Hey Cory. This is my e-mail address. I will be contacting the auction monday to get a copy of that bill of sale for my purchase of the jeep. The title was misplaced and we cannot get in touch with the person who traded it in to get their signature for the application of a new title. Therefore we are not able to register it until the application is signed. Please contact me if you need anything as I will keep you informed on other possible vehicles.

thank you again for your time and patience.

Sincerely,

Michael

Also tried to pawn an older grand off on me saying the value of the vehicle was "what I paid". Rediculous. And implied that the value of my vehicle was now lower due to the mileage I have put on over the last 3 mo.

An article in Fridays News and Observer mentioned that there are 10 day and 20 day requirements to transfer a title in NC.

It does seem like the dealer has some explaining to do..

wait, how did the Jeep even get plated and insured without a title?
Exactly what I was thinking....Im finally going to get the title for a jeep I bought off a buddy a year ago and could not get it plated or insured with out the title.

transferred plates off my yj and they were sending in the paperwork so I'm not even sure what my plates would come up if a cop ran them. Geico didn't seem to give much a damn about anything. Pretty sure I could insure anything with them regardless of ownership haha. Was asked to put together a list of suitable replacements on friday so trying to get that to them asap so maybe I can make out good on this.
