SO.... I have used my jeep all season on the beach, 4 wheel drive works perfectly....

The other day i went to engauge my 4 wheel drive... when moving forward all i got was a pop, bang slam, and an loud oh shit as i shouted in disbelief.....

I take it out of 4 wheel drive, and the jeep moves fine smooth and all good...

Monday i take it to the shop, i was so sickened i didnt even want to try and look at it... the guy gets underneith and laughs.....

Says he found the problem...

The fill plug is absolutly gone, no where to be found...

He says they just don't back out

So either some cockbag decided to be funny, or needed a plug for his transfer case.... I love people...

Now I get my jeep back next week 1200 bucks later... Gotta love it...

I inspected the underside of the jeep abt a month ago, and for some reason checked the tightness of that fill plug and my oil drain plug.... so it was not loose... This just blows...

Which Jeep? you have two in your sig. Have you by any chance took it to an oil change place recently? as in after you checked it for tightness???

I agree with Stone, $1200 is a bit much

1200 to reman a transfer case is much??? I checked it was like 2200 from the stealership, its the selec trac from my grand cherokee

the plugs dont back out on their own? My friends old 2003 ZR2 would beg to differ. They USUALLY and normally and 99.999% of the time dont, i'd agree but they can come out on their own.

A neighbors fill plug was loose on the rear diff on 2003? suburban. Bought it new and had never touched it. Didn't leak a lot ( 1/3 of a quart? ), just got lucky we noticed it.

That sucks.....but, This is not a good place to tell us you spent 1200 on a t-case. Most of us here work on our own rigs.

Did the mech. show you some broken parts? Maybe it just needed fluid & a fill plug.....if not one of us here could have hooked you up with a good used t-case for a lot less & maybe even helped you install it for a few beers.

Did you at least get the old t-case back? You could sell it and get some money back. Always ask for your old parts back so you can inspect them.

damn i am more used to putting out the flames, not starting them

not trying to be a dick but if you took care of your stuff well enough you might have noticed the fill plug was gone

If reading ain't your strong suit, your on the wrong type of website

And to be clear.... Every upgrade, mod, add on or whatever on this jeep has been done by me, or myself along with a few friends, the first thing i didnt do was my gear and lockers install....

And now that my jeep is a every day driver, and I am on the road for my job 4-5 days a week, i just dont have the time to do it myself or the chance to have my jeep down for a few days because theres something more i have to do... I take it to a shop here that has done wonders with friends vehicles and a place i know thats going to do it right, and make it so it won't break because of the way i drive it.. Having trust in the work, is well worth any extra money to me...

So evidently I am a dumbass for getting my case redone for 1200 bucks, I should go underneith my jeep atleast once a day and check the tightness of every fill plug... Guess i am just the average dumbass...

Nevermind guys, just tried to vent, tell you crowd some shit and move on... just nevermind...

Shit, give the guy a break. I bet 50% of you can't recall right off the top of your head what size wrench/socket/bit your own fill plug takes.

OK, so he got BOHICA'd on the new t-case, and the old one was most likely repairable, but time is money.... and if you don't have a bunch of one, you'd better have a bunch of the other.

Hate it for ya man.. Honestly. I'd be fuckin PISSED if my t-case grenaded because some punk fucker took the plug.

But if you checked it ~1 week ago, even if the fill plug was out, you'd have noticed it by now... and it wouldn't (shouldn't) just go kapow as soon as you engage the front output. (Which I bet is always spinning on that thing)

Oh well...

yeah the front imput is always spinning... The price was to reman the one i have... New chain, chain guide, tailshaft was fucked up some how burnt or somethin, i have not looked at the parts, but this shop has always done outstanding work and very stand up about repairs, they always have given myself and others i know the old parts back....

when he drove it in the parking lot, standing out side you could hear the chain rattle, something my tire noise and being inside could let me hear before...

it never really blew or anything, it just gave me a pop bang jump.... then i took it out of 4 wheel drive and it drove fine... its nuts...

So do all of y'all think 1200 to reman my case is expensive?? and if so how much have y'all paid for remove, reman, replace and stand behind???

Not trying to bust your chops, but was it a new t-case? And who did the work? I know shit happens sometimes.

Factory case... 86K miles

Sounds a little high, but, to play devil's advocate once again, consider this.

Assuming this is a NP247 T/C
If you look up the flat rate time to R&R and rebuild that T/C it calls for about 6.6 hours.

If this is a full time licensed repairshop, getting dealer level prices of say $65/ hr, that is $429 for labor alone.

I have no idea what got toasted, but ..

Try to find a good used viscous couling for that T/C.

If you have to buy new parts.
There are some expensive parts in that unit. Just for example, the mainshaft oil pump and pump rotor list for almost $700, the chain lists for $279, plus bearings, seals, forks, fluids and ?????

It could easily add up quickly.

Yes, maybe a little high, but it doesn't really sound like a rape job either.

Granted, you COULD swap out for a decent used 231 or 242 and all the conversions that go along with it and and ...
