I talked the wife into letting me park the minivan outside, allowing me to perform my magic in the garage. Santa had taken advantage of the pre-Christmas sale RuffStuff was having, and hooked me up with a HD diff cover for my DD-XJ 8.25. Seemed like a good time to trim the excess metal dragging below the axle housing...

No big news here, but this is my personal experiece with the stock cover peeling away after only an handful of wheeling trips.

If it wasnt a sealing surface, I was gonna cut it off.

I may have trimmed a little too much, the cover overhangs the housing now. I'll just have to drag it over some rocks and see if it holds up.

I ground the bottom of the cover to try and flush it up with the shaved housing, but it was getting too close to the lowest bolt head. I'll try it as is, I can always take off a bit more later.

At the bottom center, I ended up 3/8" better. The real improvement came at the lowers 'corners' where I got rid of about 5/8" overhang.

The RTV is curing right now, will fill the diff up with gear oil tommorrow. The RTV said allow 24 hours for complete cure, more if its cold :(

little update...A few days ago I noticed some dripping. At least half of the allen head screws had worked themselves loose, I had to crank 'em down pretty good. Still haven't wheeled it yet. Next time I pop the cover off, I guess I'll use some loc-tite in the bolt holes.

Maybe try some green loc-tite... #290 I think. It'll wick into the treads. No need to take apart. The oil might mess with it. Be worth a try though.
