My daughters XJ 88' model, out of the blue started backfiring upon throttling. It will idle (a little rough) but when you mash down on the pedal it backfires and pops. On the road, when you try to speed up it acts like it is short on fuel, but will finally take off for a little bit and starts to back firing again. I have changed the following, engine, crank postion switch, throttle body, map sensor, checked timing although not adjustable, new plugs, cap, rotor, wires. only thing I can think of would be fuel filter (tomorrow) and fuel pump. Does it sound like they could be the cause? any suggestions welcomed.
Thanks!
