Are the 4.0 XJ 98-99 bellhousing patterns interchangeable...
could i put an automatic 99 4.0 ENGINE in my manual trans98 4.0 and it bolt directly up without an adapter plate:confused:

The only thing you might look at is the back of the crankshaft where the pilot bushing goes. You might have to machine out the crank to accept the pilot bushing. Not sure though.

There is a pilot bushing in there if it's a manual, but you can remove it for it to accept the torque converter.

Yes, but will a pilot bushing fit into the crank of an engine that came with an automatic? Not trying to be a smart ass, I honestly don't know, just trying to help if it would be a problem. 'Cause it would suck to get the engine in there and then find out it doesn't work.

If the engine came from an automatic, there wont be a pilot bearing in the back of the crank, but the hole will be there. All you have to do is buy a pilot bearing, and hammer it in.

Gotcha, that's what I didn't know was if the bearing would fit in the hole.

Sorry, I wasn't really sure what you were saying. And he's correct, it has the hole already there, you just have to put in the pilot bushing.

I wasn't trying to sound like an ass either, I just read and replied in a hurry.

You didn't come across as an a$$ to me at all, I think we were all a bit confused by what we were all saying! Anyway, glad to have learned something and keep on truckin'.
