got a 97 xj with stock 3.55s. i am wanting to go back up to 33s. i am on 32s now but the 33s were just terrible on the highway. what should i gear my jeep to if i need to be able to go 75 down the highway and still crank out like 18 to 20 mpg with 33s. is it possible? do light offroading like once a month or so and take it in the snow whenever i get the chance. 95% road driven though

I'm guessing HP30 and 8.25 rear? For 33's I'd go 4.56's... I think they're making 4.88's now too for them.. 4.88's would be better offroad and provid more get up and go on road but the pinion gets pretty small... On 33's I dont think it would be the problem though.

EDIT: If you're going to be paying someone to set them up, you may as well go ahead and pick up an Aussie or No-slip for the rear..

yeah. thats the right axles. and yeah i know a guy over at united transmissions in greensboro and dont think he will do me wrong on it. i dont trust myself re gearing it though. and not a bad idea on the aussie while im at it. how much do you think it will run me for the whole set up plus labor? i need to save my pennies. i was thinking about saving up for another dd for gas mileage but i thought if i could get this one set up for sinifcantly less than another car it might be worth at least looking into. idealy i could find some axles already geared cause i would do that myself.

I havent had gears setup in awhile but I think it's somewhere around $200-250 per axle for labor... Probably around $250 per axle for gears/install kits... Then a rear locker for $300.

I'd think you could get out for around $1300ish for everything..

You chould also give ECGS a call for a quote they're in Durham ...

ha yeah. that will be a good bit of penny saving. but still alot cheaper than getting any kind of car that might be close to reliable. what do you think i could crank out for gas mileage?

I'm trying to remember what I was getting w/ 285's and 4.56 gearing... I'm pretty sure that driving mostly highway i was still seeing 19ish..

yeah if i could do that i would be thrilled cause right now with the 32s im getting 12 city and like 15 highway. seems like it will be worth it in the lond run ill just have to save my pennys for a while

Have you changed the speedo gear to account for larger tires? Yoou might be going furhter (and faster) than than you think if you just added larger tires with no correction to the speedo/odo.
