This is one of those hard to find the right answer questions...

I took the XJ out for a spin last night. First time I've had it out for speed over 45 mph and > 5 minutes.

There's really a lot of heat coming from the floor/lower side area around the tranny tunnel.
Is this typical? I mean like it felt like the heaters were running.
Now there's no carpet or anything there to block it either.
I just don't know what is "normal"...

yup, along with what everyone said... haha try sittin in an old muscle/drag car with a t400 thats been cruisin around for a new hrs on a hot summer day... hot enough to fry an egg on

Ok, so it's "normal".
What are some good CHEAP ways to block it? Carpet padding maybe?

I'd hate to get an interior tan on my lilly-white chicken legs.
(more importantly, I don't want to be seeing Mark's ugly mug fouling my personal space with sweat if it can be avoided!)

well i dunno how much bedliner will help with insulating it... but they make a tacky insulation mat that alot of hotrodders and what not use to keep the heat and noise out under the carpet... its kinda like dynamat, if u know what that is...

haha but yeah in his chevelle he just touches the tunnel, and uses that as a "tranny temp gauge" to see if he needs to let it sit a while... haha

i remember my last trip in the XJ, wheelin in the snow... i was warm and toasty cuz of the heat on my feet while my passenger said he was freezin... so maybe that side of the tunnel doesnt get as hot...
