I havent messed with xj's much. so how much lift is needed for no cutting and running 33's? how about 35's? and im wanting to leave the flares on

no cutting and keeping the flares? good luck stuffing even 32s under 4.5". First to note is that the facelifted XJ (97-01) is even tighter than the 84-96. Specificaclly the front fender flares on the newer aero bumper are tighter, but I think the rest of the flares are also tighter too.

5" with bumpstops and proper wheel b/s can be really close but will work with no rubbing for 33's. also a long arm kit will help rotate the axle away from the lower fender/door area.
but its kinda hard to lift an xj without trimming to get the desired tire size.

will this be a DD or a wheeler?

mainly dd, going to use it for trips to the cabin carrying camping gear. looks like its getting 33's

For 33s and no trimming Id say you need atleast 5-6inches if you bumpstop. Also need to get the correct backspacing as the stock wheels will rub control arms at full lock with 33s.

instead of starting a new thread, thought i would just bump this. Im now working on an 89 mj. so total different ft fenders and bumpers that the 98 xj I was working on. it already has a 4.5 lift on it. has anyone used the brackets the brackets from rc that drops the ft control arms? pros? cons? this is going to be a dd/shop truck. Im also thinking about swapping the rear 35 out to 8.25 or 8.8. if i go soa on the rear just wondering how to get the ft even

The drop brackets will give you a better ride than the same lift with arms in the stock location. The only real downside is loss of ground clearance. But since it is a shop truck, no real reason not to install them. My old MJ had 33's with 4.5" and some minor trimming. It really depends on the wheel width and offset too.

do you know how much lift the drop brackets net you? seems the rear lift consists of an aal and a shackle. It has 32s now. i doubt I ever go bigger than a 33. again plans are to swap the ft for a newer 1 piece axle version and larger axles. and I havent decided definitely between an 8.8 or 8.25. I also have an xj d44. all are geared 3.55. I really think for my usage 3.73s would do better. so if the drop brackets ride better. thats the route im going. on the rear. would soa on stock springs give me the best ride?

The drop brackets won't give you any lift, that's what the springs do.;) Remember, you are not moving the coil bucket, just the control arm mounting points on the frame. The drop brackets give you better control arm angles and a better ride due to the corrected control arm angles.
That will be a Renix 4.0 in that MJ. It will need more gearing than 3.73 with 33s. If it were me I would be planning on at least 4.10's, but ideally 4.56's.
A good recipe would be SOA rear, drop brackets up front with 5" or so lift. MJ's SOA ride very well.
