XJ Long-arm problems?

Anyone running a Rusty's long-arm kit on your XJ? I recently bought an XJ that had a new Rusty's adjustable long-arm kit installed. The problem that I'm having is a "popping" when I put the rig in reverse. I am also noticing that the axle rotates up and down at the pinion easily. Being that I am originally a CJ guy, I need help figuring out this coil spring stuff. Any suggestions? Comments? What part of this suspension is meant to keep the pinion or caster from changing? I am not running a sway bar. Make a difference?

Thanks?

Rick

Rick,
Check to make sure that everythign is tight. If there is motion at any of the rubber bushings they need to be replaced.

Control arms keep the axle caster/pinion angle in position. Sway bars don't make a difference in this regard. Check out the CA bushings and joints and their bolts. Also look for a cracked/loose CA mount on the axle or the frame.

Does his long arms use the Acme threads like the short arms? I have broke both of the short arms with poly bushings. If it has Acme threads and you don't have the nuts on there it will cause it to pop. At least my short arms do. Not sure if this helps but it took me forever to figure it out for the short arms. good luck

does this rig have a new adjustable track bar, or is it the stock one and they redrilled the hole for it to work??

I have seen the track bar hole wallow out and cause this same affect..

this would be on the side of the axle not the frame

get out and have someone shift from drive to reverse while you look at everything to find what is moving. In my TJ it was the rubber bushings that had given up and then that ovaled the bolt holes in the mounts. It was with a lot of abuse. For the trackbar have the second person turn the wheel back and forth. The axle shouldn't move opposite the steering. Find the loose part and replace it.

my jeep did the same thing when i had rusty's adjustable lowers. i was running the stock uppers and it would pop when i went in reverse. it was mostly due to the fact that the lower CA's were loose on the axle end but just make sure everything is tight like everyone else has said. also make sure that the holes in the brackets havent been wallowed out, if that is the case then you will have to weld new metal on and drill some new holes. take some up pics of where the control arms attach to the axle and put them on here.

Thanks guys. Like I said, I'm new to this "coil spring" stuff. I'll take a look to be sure all is tight and that the bushings aren't worn. The LA kit is new...no scratches and shinny paint, at least until I bought it! The control arms don't have the jam nut in place. Do you think this could be the problem? The course threads "popping"?
I had someone look under the rig while I went from drive to reverse, and the problem seems to be where the upper CA tiesa into the lower CA. Maybe the bushings?

The track bar was replaced with the lift....ALL new and beefy, as well as the tie rod.

Thanks for the input. Keep the ideas coming.

Thanks again!

Rick

Sounds like you about got it figured out Rick. Now load it up and come to Tellico with us.:)
Not ready just yet, John. Things are getting better...still learning to sleep.

I'll get this thing figured out and locked, geared and be ready for the first trip...Feb? March?

You up for a late run this year to URE?
