Long Arm upgrade question.

We have an 88 XJ with a Rough Country 6.5” lift and want to upgrade to an 8”+ Long Arm, what is the cheapies route to take. We thought about the Rustys Long Arm Kit, Coils, and Shock but we would be looking at $1000.

ANY IDEAS?

Thanks, John

Most long arm kits I have seen are really pricey, IMHO $1000 seems a little on the low side, so maybe that is the one you should grab.

Rustys XJ Cherokee Long Arm Upgrade $790
8.5"-9" springs $150
shocks $

So i'm looking over $1000

Yes most Long arm kits are pricey. I had a friend help me build my own. I did all the calculations because I went to a 3 link front and he did all the welding.

What about the rear? What about the steering/brake lines, etc? I've got the 8" (now 6.5") rusty's "long travel kit" and trac bar, and would never buy another rusty's product again. In general... their service, products and shipping suck.

:edit: And for close to $900 after shipping and such...you could build 3 "long arm kits" yourself.

Why 8"? What tire are you trying to clear?

If you really need the extra 2.5" I would probably go with the RK kit if you don't have access to anything to fab your own with. Don't go with Rusty's long arm (springs are okay).

Long Arm

We are running 35's and with the 6.5" lift the tires look to tight. We have a Rough Country 6.5" Lift and the upper and lower arms are adjustable. Can i just install a 8"+/- coil spring and and adjust the arms for the lift?
Thanks

Are you talking about adjustable short arms? If so then 6.5" is about the max any one would recommend on them. 8" on short arms is going to be real rough because the arms are going to be almost vertical to the road, and if your XJ sees any pavement time, you are going to hate the ride.

Yes short arms

Thats what i want to know, thanks for the info.

Why not get a reputable builder on here to quote you one?
Hcore 4x4 in Boone built mine. Aaron did a great job.
This is not a bad route to go. I basically desighned what I wanted and have a friend from Concord do the fab with me. If you are intrested I'll pm you his name and number.

i can do it, but thanks for the offer.

just my .02, but 6.5 is plenty for 35's. I'm running 37's on a 5.5" spring with plenty of room to spare (I had ran 38's on that spring as well). The xj probably just needs some trimming. And yeah, don't go any higher with short arms. Have you ever looked into mid-arms (search on naxja.org)?

x2 on Clayton if you buy. I have never heard anything bad about them.

Im running the Rough country 6.5 with the Rockkrawler 3 link in the front and 36s with 4.5 lift shocks in rear and 6-8 inch lift shocks in front and love it!!!

Ironrockoffroad.com has a LA upgrade pretty cheap if thats what ur going for they use it on their RC lift

Can't speak to the rear Rock Krawler XJ setup but the front is pretty much the same as a TJ. That's what I have and I hate it. I've spent much more correcting the RK lift than I saved from buying a better kit in the first place.
My $.02
