XJ Voltage trouble

Are you basing that off the voltmeter on the instrument panel or are you actually hooking up a digital multimeter and checking the voltage? My 2000 TJ has experienced times where the voltmeter on the instrument cluster was jumping all over and it was a loose connection behind the instrument cluster. Also, are you getting any codes?

check with a meter, those alternators are interally regulated, what was the old one doing? Sometimes the wire going from the alternator to battery has a fusible like that causes problems
 
My 99 XJ did the same thing. Had the alternator test and it was fine. Problem turned out to be a shorted cell in the batt.
