94 ZJ 4.0 42re
swapping in a AW4 from 98XJ 4.0
Anyone done this and can shed light on the Crank Sensor part of this swap?
I know the crank sensors have to match the corresponding year Flywheel since those do change over some years so I'm assuming this is the correct way to do it>
BUT in order to do that, I have to cut the pigtail off cause the 94 ZJ uses different pigtail vs the 98xj and splice them in...
I read on a thread somewhere the guy said to pick up a crank sensor for the year of your ZJ but off an XJ?? So he's saying I should buy a crank sensor for a 94XJ but that doesn't make any sense to me since I'm using a 98 XJ and Flywheel...Any help anyone, Thanks

and can anyone confirm: there shouldn't be any signal the PCM from my 94ZJ is looking for from the trans correct?
This is a off road toy so it will be manual shifted AW4, not hooking up TCU or any of that

94 will be ODB 1 and the 98 OBD 2. I would think you would need the 94 flex plate not the 98. Never done this so just speculation based on the 2 different engine management systems.

I think the 93 ZJ came with a AW4

Try getting parts from that specific one year jeep!
Too late lol. This 98 trans was basically free with low miles, original 42re crapped out.

Id assume I guess that it wouldn't matter as long as the crank sensor matched flywheel?!!? Maybe I'm assuming wrong but in my years of working on these thats what I've kinda gathered..I'm still lookin into it

I've done this before (swapping CPS and transmissions between model years).
The 42RE used a 1 bolt CPS and the AW4 used a 2 bolt. You'll need a CPS for the bellhousing used (AW4 2 bolt in this case). You can splice the XJ CPS to the ZJ connector (same number of wires).
Verify clearance/gap to the flexplate after you're done. The correct gap is the thickness of the paper on an oil filter box, seriously. Put a dab of grease on a small piece, set it on the CPS, install and spin the engine over. If the paper is gone, you're good to go.
The AW4 uses totally different controls than the 42. You'll need a RAD Designs shifter to operate it.

so I have the Crank sensor for the 98 AW4 and I spliced it in by following what appeared to be the same center to center, left to left, right to right wiring of the connectors when splicing and that was a no go...do I just play around with the 3 wires till it fires? Also, the AW4 crank sensors self center themselves so is the paper thing really needed? (I'm sure you're aware the bolts for the AW4 crank sensor have the sleeves built in and pretty much give NO movement to the sensor whatsoever once they are on it...thanks Jody. I haven't messed with it since I first tried to start it sunday but hopped onto other stuff....but I'm assuming I need to try different wiring of the pigtail

The cardboard will allow you to verify depth since you're swapping CPS, trans and flexplates
ok and the wiring just mess with different ways till I get a signal? thanks

Yes.
It's an AC generator. Probe it till it's generating AC voltage. Then it's good to go.
yep that was easy, the first different way I swapped wires fired right up lol. Thanks buddy:beer:
