So the guy I'm ordering my custom pistons through does not have the camshafts in stock and isn't sure how long it'll take to get it. So I'm looking for other places to pick one up. Anybody have any ideas for an upgraded camshaft for the 98 grand Cherokee with a 4.0 That I can still use the stock Springs and lifters? Does anybody have any experience with Clegg's stage one camshaft kit?

The guy who's making my pistons (russ) Only has the camshaft that's been nitrided which is an extra 150 bucks. That puts it a little bit outside of my price range for being a budget build.

Your thoughts are always appreciated

I've used plenty of off the shelf Comp 4.0 cams with good success. You'll need upgraded springs however
Don't over cam it. That'll introduce tuning issues that are very costly to correct.

I'm looking to not upgrade springs. Clegg's has a kit that works with the stock parts. It seems to be decent but wanted to see if there was anything better or about the same in quality

Depending on the miles on the motor it may be worth your time (money) to upgrade springs anyways. For the money saved on an out the box cam you could spend the extra on springs which aren’t that much anyway.

I'd replace the springs regardless.

What cam did Russ recommend to go with the rest of the build? Not knowing anything else about it, I'd probably just grab a 231.

You'll want new springs anyway, just due to normal wear.
The OEM replacments from the dealer are upgraded vs the factory installed ones.
If you go with a "bigger" cam, you'll have to upgrade the springs for optimal performance.

Or just leave the stock cam in.

And you will need new lifters regardless. Flat tappet lifters wear in to match the cam.

Don’t go too big with replacement cam. As stated above tuning issues can arise and the cam needs to be matched for optimal performance with everything else.

New stock springs will be fine as they are a slight upgrade over older factory springs as stated above.

They work with factory retainers.

So I was td on a different post on this form to not Install new springs at first till after the motor was broken in. Is this not correct?

Can anyone elaborate on if this is true or not? Should I change out the springs at the same time as the camshaft or wait?

Prob makes less power and especially less usable power than a stock cam but the sound makes up for it! I’ve done some research on this and have always came back to keeping the stock cam, even in a stoker application.

Pro tip:
You can accomplish the same sound by making the firing order 164235.
