Ok so this is the strangest thing. About 3 months ago I had a gear slip out around a turn in my wifes zj. First thing I do is get the service done on it (filter, fluid). Thing comes back and shifts like gold. It still shifts smooth but coming back from a beach trip I get this lurch inbetween 70-80. Rpms jump about 500 and then back down. It happened about once every 5min for about 4 or 5 times. Didn't happen on the way down there...just on the way back. I checked the fluid and its clean and full. Just changed the oil, air filter, and all fluids(-tranny, tcase) 3 weeks ago. It just felt like one big hiccup each time. No check engine light/codes pop up so Im sitting here wondering wtf? Any suggestions where to start?

:( . Guess my wife is gonna love that I just gave her this jeep then lol. Saying it was that would it be a sudden death or a slow crippling death that I could ignore for another week. Also could it be a tps problem without the CE light coming on?

mine done that rpm would surge between 2000-2300 on hwy serviced trans adjusted both bands and it went away shortly after that was 6 months ago had jeep tech. tell me to replace both battery cables and check eng grounds on harness ecu can do weird things iff not getting good current

Are you sure its not the torque converter locking up?

If it's a random power surge (not trans related) I would check the throttle position sensor like mentioned above. You could also clean the IAC, throttle body, and do a general tuneup. ZJ's have issues with alot of electronics when things aren't just the way they like it.

I agree with Elliot on all the above.

And yes, the torque converter can go out very quickly. I had gear one second, put in reverse and had to power at all.
