Need a new grill

I have multiple grills and I am building a grill house this summer. My Weber kettle is 20 plus years old and it works great. I did upgrade the cooking grate to a cast iron one which really holds the heat and helps sear.

The Traeger was a store demo and it is awesome for a long slow smoke or cooking breakfast on the griddle accessory. There are a lot of other pellet grills out there if you dont want to pay the Traeger tax , but stick to the traeger pellets as they dont clump up like the cheaper ones do.

I also have an Akorn metal egg , it is very versatile and can cook just about anything. I have smoked boston butts on it , made a decent pizza and seared steaks a plenty. Simple , easy and inexpensive . Get a Weber charcoal chimney for this or the kettle mentioned above. You can have your charcoal ready in 10-15 minutes with one crumpled up piece of newspaper.

The latest addition to the hill is a Weber SE 315. It is heavily built and even has stainless steel grates. I am not a gas grill person , but my wife wanted to bring one home from the store and I have been very impressed with it. As previously mentioned it is the quickest grill to cook on .

If you decide on a Traeger or Weber shoot me the model number you want and I can send you the NC4x4 price. I dont currently stock any eggs as we are out of room until the next expansion.

I also have a webber 22 kettle that is more than 20 yrs. I've replaced the grates, the cleaning assembles many times. It has never been covered and it stays on the deck. It is great for smoking and grilling steaks, burgers, chicken etc. You can't buy a better grill for the price of the webber. I like my pitboss Austin xl for butts, ribs, chicken and it's hard mess up anything W the meat probes. I've smoked some pizzas and it makes it fast and good. I have 5 or 6 bags of different wood pellets and it's nice to try them w other meats

Pit Boss Laredo 1000
Blackstone 36”

That’s our current lineup at the house. It works well but grilling on the pellet smoker takes a little longer than normal however our steaks off of it have been nothing less than stellar. I keep a separate 24” or whatever the small size Blackstone is in the toy hauler for cooking on the road. Those things are just super versatile.

Burgers, Pork Chops, breakfast and veggies on the Blackstone
Steaks and chicken on the smoker as well as a the typical smoker cuts.

I have a Pit Boss Lexington, I bought it at Wally World 3 years ago and love it, I have some chicken on it now, beside it is a charcoal grill and a Blackstone. I would give a pellet smoker a good look even if you don’t grill out that much

Blackstone have a 17" one burner and a 22" , I think they both share the same H burner, the 17 has one and the 22 has 2.

I've worn out and thrown away more grills than I can remember.
8 years ago the fam bought me one og the nice stainless ones form Lowes.
Still looks brand new, cooks great! ....but a little on the hot side.
Nothing a griller can't deal with.
2 years ago we got a Blackstone ......... best thing I've ever cooked on!

RecTeq 590 here love it from smoking at 200 all the way to searing steaks at 600 its out performed all my expectations. Have a Wilmington Cape Fear grill that hardly gets used but you'll never buy another one built like a tank.

Do you have to clean all the wood chips out of the thing if you don't use it for a month or so? My grill stays outside, but I do keep a normal cover on it.

I have a Traeger Ironwood 885. Got it 2 years ago to replace my last gas grill. I don't miss a gas grill at all. The Traeger will cook just about any way I want to. The only addition I would make to my arsenal would be to have a dedicated griddle, like a blackstone.

Have you tried the Traeger griddle attachment? Works awesome on eggs and such.

I've had a Pit Boss 700 for 4 years. Runs like a champ. No one mentioned it yet, but you can get a thermal blanket for your pellet smoker. This makes it a lot better for consistent temperature and getting the temp up to grilling range.

I've been wanting to get a master built gravity charcoal grill. It's the convenience of a pellet grill but you use charcoal in the hopper.
My friend has had one of these for about a year. He grills on it and has no complaints. He's not as hardcore with BBQ as other folks I know though.

If you mean pellets, yes and no depending on your smoker. My mid end wally world pit boss would leak rain between the pellet hopper and grill body right into the auger tube. I took it apart and gave it some room temp vulcanizing cream in between the two and now it can stay uncovered in the rain and the pellets stay nice and dry. Theres a thread on here somewhere about all of that. I think the longest I went between fill-ups was maybe a month in the winter and it lit and burned just fine. Aside from a blackstone I'll never need anything but a pellet rig. Low and slow ronco style, just set it and forget it, or hot and fast right over the firepot.

I had a pellet grill - a reqtec specifically. If you want a pellet Id look into reqtec. 100% made in georgia. Built like a tank and a warranty you cant beat.

That said...I did a bunch of work at a pellet plant and promptly sold my reqtec.

There is substantial but denied research out there about the “binders” used I thus pellets and their carcinogenic properties when burned.

Most will probably never cook on it enough to matter but I was concerned enough by the NDA, MSDS, and Safety Prep to change my habits.

Food grade pellets or pellets for heat or bedding?

food grade.
yes I'm aware of the marketing language that food grade contain "no fillers".
Or some will say they use "vegetable oil" as a filler.

Id just suggest, carefully, that there isnt a legal FDA definition of vegetable oil like you might think...

This makes me sad because I love my pellet rig.

40 y/o Holland (bought it from my cousin 10 years ago for $50, pretty sure it was a 1st wedding gift 🤣 )... he asked to "buy it back" and promptly received a GTFOH!

Have grilled a gazillion times and smoked a couple times (a bit too shallow to stand up a chicken) with ZERO flares/fires

I often plan meals while camping solely on what can be cooked using only the blackstone. Its so easy and keeps me from washing pots and pans.
This

I've got a 36" Blackstone and it has almost entirely replaced my little Weber gas grill. I've got a 32' enclosed that I haul my 4runner in. I just roll the Blackstone in up front, strap it down and roll out! It is absolutely wonderful and soooo dang versatile. Bacon, eggs, hash browns & pancakes for breakfast. Some turkey Reubens / quesadillas / hot dogs / burgers for lunch. And fajitas / hibachi / philly cheese steaks / etc. for supper. The possibilities are endless on this thing. A lot of ppl get a smaller one for camping but due to my setup (just rolling that joker up in the enclosed), I've yet to see the need (not to mention...family of 4 w/ two growing boys)

I do want a new smoker, though, but can't figure out what to go with. I had a GMG Daniel Boone but was fairly disappointed and sold it after a couple of months. That said, there's quite a few of the guys on here I roll w/ that absolutely love their GMG's. I think I got a lemon. Mine ate through pellets like crazy. Probably should have called GMG (as I've heard they have fan-friggin-tastic customer service) to get it gone through but never did. I got to the point of, why in the hell is there so much dang technology and things to go wrong w/ a smoker (thus why I'm leaning heavily towards a Kamado Joe). I've used a propane MasterBuilt for years with great success. My only knock on it is you have to babysit it as it won't hold temps as well as I'd like and you have to continuously add wood chips for smoking

I have a 17" griddle I take camping and a 36" at home. I would love to take the bigger one camping. I think when I get my enclosed finished I'm going to pick this one up. It folds up and can be strapped to the wall.

I picked up a portable pellet grill a while back and its been great. It's not a fancy ballin GMG grill, its a poor boy pit boss. It seems to work great. I've just went through my first 20lb bag of pellets and I've smoked 4 butts (all separately because it will only fit one at a time) and 2 rounds of chicken thighs.

I do have to admit I just picked up a blingin wireless meat thermometer and it has been fantastic. I wish I would have got one a long time ago.

I've had one of these for decades and it's versatile. You can adjust the height of the coals up and down or have it slant low on one end high on the other end to have searing area for meats and a cooler side for veggies etc and a It's also a great smoker. It has 4 grates and I'll pull out one the right side and pile coals there to slow smoke meats on the left side. I soak wood chunks and toss them on the coals or put soaked wood chips in a smoker box. This smoker makes better flavor than my pit boss.

I’ve had a green egg for ~10 years don’t really use it much now that I’m not into staying up all night

I just picked up one of those for the motorhome. Have you had any issues with it over an extended cook? I doubt I'll do any serious smoking when wheeling but you never know.

I haven't had any real troubles out of it. As long as you keep pellets in it it works great. I have noticed since I got my new wireless thermometer that the digital readout shows about 50-75 degrees hotter than actual ambient temp. Other than that it works great.
