Tell your kids about banking

So due to my kids inexperience and naivety, all my Wells Fargo accounts are being closed!!!

I’ve been a WF account holder for 33years. This past June I took my kid to open a bank account with WF and put my name on the account just in case an emergency required.

The other day she apparently received a piece of mail that looked like it was from WF ( it wasn't, it was scam/fraud, something) and it was a check addressed to her.

Being a naive kid, she tried mobile depositing it. The app flaked out in the process and she sent it a second time.

A few days pass and the money that showed deposited was removed by WF.

Then today I get an email from WF saying all of my accounts are being closed. I go up to the bank branch to talk to someone. They call fraud protection and I get the whole story from them and find out that I’m also being black listed from WF.

No courtesy call, no nothing. Just fuck off and we’ll mail you your money. I’ve NEVER had an issue from my side with WF. No bounced checks, nothing. And this is the end.

They can go fuck themselves and my kid got an earful for being dumb.

I also had a line of $25k credit with a zero balance. I Hope this doesn’t fuck with my credit!

Anyone recommend a bank or banks? I don’t have any others and need to get something set up for direct deposits and auto pays.

To make sure I'm understanding correctly...
She tried to mobile deposit a check. It didn't go through. She tried a second time. You didn't say, but I'm guessing it then double deposited? After that, they pulled the money back, closed all accounts in the names of those on that account (you and your daughter), and then blacklisted you?

Wells Fargo is a steaming pile of shit. I can't tell you how many times weve had checks stolen and deposited by someone simply writing "Pay to the order of Jimmy Smith", then Jimmy Smith signing it. It's at least a dozen. And these are checks made out to a company. That should never be acceptable. But it keeps happening. Also their CEO banking portal is terrible and they have fees for EVERYTHING even at a multi-million dollar corporate banking level.

WF is awful so is BoA in my personal opinion. If we were in the garage I would say more :D

I hate them lots, but that's real drastic. There's gotta be more to this story.

What exactly was the item she tried to deposit? Publisher's clearing house check?

correct and accurate.

I've generally had a positive experience with Truliant and they are Winston Salem based, so they should have locations around Greensboro. Their high yield savings has been around 4% for a couple years, and the online banking stuff works fine. Also they generally have some of the best rates on auto loans if that is of any value to you. PNC has been ok as well. I don't have any other strong opinions except Truist sucks and Wells Fargo sucks.

Because KID. Young and dumb. and I'll take blame for not instructing her on all avenues of Fraud.
But where was the fraud? She deposited a check addressed to her, correct? Not her fault the app glitched, and even if it did, their system should not allow you to deposit a check with the same routing and account and check number twice.

I won't sit hear and say that my kid is telling me 100% Truth and the full story. I'm not one of those blind parents. But I will say that she can be airheaded enough in the streets smarts department that it certainly is an option.

Credit union.

Sorry, I typed that while still hot in the head and didn't clearly point out where WF sees the fraud. The Check was made out to her but it was a fake check.

She may be lucky she hasn't been charged. Modern banking is super uptight about alleged fraud.

Yeah, that part may have been important. But still, not sure how that is your daughters fault. They are going after the "victim" so to speak, not the perpetrator.

EXACTLY! I understand they have to look at it differently, but look at the 33 FAWKIN years of History too. Oh, we see that a 17 year old just got her first account... and Dad has a long clean history. Yep... Fuck 'em shut it down!

I've been with Truliant for almost 30 years. They have been good, as a whole.

That being said, we don't use a debit card for any purchases, only credit.

SECU

Luckily my wife had an account there MANY years ago before we met, and she kept it open with $20 in it.

We had a CRAZY experience with BB&T/Truist that led us to leave.

Third for SECU.

WF is absolutely trash. I was with them for a decade. Then one day we got a random $300 "service fee" that overdrafted the account. They reversed the service fee, but wouldn't refund the $35 overdraft fee. Supposedly the fee was manually entered by an employee in Michigan, wtf?

Then we were with civic for a few years and loved it. Then they merged with LGFU and it went to crap. Suddenly lost the ability to mobile deposit because they "had a massive increase in check fraud". It was supposed to only apply to new accounts, but apparently it got applied across the board and they can't figure out how to undo it. Might not sound like a big deal, except one of my accounts is a work reimbursement account that I mobile deposit checks to weekly..... And civic only has a couple branches in major cities.

So now we are with SECU entirely. Oh, and we don't do any credit FWIW.
